New York Anime Festival 2008
Preview - Elsewhere in New York
by Mikhail Koulikov,
While most of the action at NYAF will be concentrated at the Javits Center, the convention has partnered with two other venues to help host an all-around great weekend for Japanese pop culture fans.
Saturday, September 27
7:00 p.m. (doors open 6:30 p.m.)
The Knitting Factory
74 Leonard Street
Far East to East Showcase
Rather than packing their musical acts inside the Javits, NYAF partnered with the venerable Knitting Factory performance space in New York's Tribeca neighborhood to host the performances of four different Japanese bands. Quaff, Tsu Shi Ma Mi Re, and punk outfits BakuBeni and Falsies on Heat will all play at the all-ages show, along with America's The Notorious MSG, Echostream, and Minirex.
Sunday, September 28
7:00 p.m.
Morimoto Restaurant
88 10th Avenue
NYAF Official After Party
Come meet Iron Chef Masaharu Morimoto at his New York Anime Festival panel - and then, follow the festivities to the official convention after-party held at the downstairs bar of the Morimoto restaurant in the Meatpacking District.
Anf if you've traveled from hundreds of miles away (or from across the river in New Jersey) for a weekend in New York, and want even more Japanese culture than what the festival can give you, be sure to check out the brand-new Kinokuniya Japanese book store (1073 Avenue of the Americas), with its specially-commissioned mural by Vagabond and Slam Dunk's Takehiko Inoue, and thousands of volumes of manga in stock.
