I MUST see this when it comes out. Nausica is just the type of epic movie that would be perfect on the big screen.

Oh Hell Yeah!!
Can't wait to see it on the big screen. Plus the english dub is pretty good. Better than most anime. |

A "small scale theatrical release"...i.e., there's no way I'll get to see it without driving far, far away. Darn you, niche films that I want to see on the big screen! Darn you, I say!

I am in agreeance here.Unless you live in a major city or close to it there is no chance in hell most of us will able to see this movie. At this point the closest thing you will see this on a "big screen" is if you own a huge ass tv or really rich and have an acutal threate in your house.Plus disney should have done this before the dvd was released. In my opnion disney has done these movies wrong in so many ways. But this topic has been discussed already. I bet it will be coincide with the release of Howl's Moving Castle.

Don't know where I'll be this summer exactly, but if I'm within a reasonable drive to one of the major theaters showing this, I'll go, even if it IS the dub. Heck, I WANT to see THIS dub (I'm a HUGE patrick stewart fan. the man is world class), because of who they've casted for the english version.

OMG, I have to see it on a theater screen. I just know this is going to be like Spiritied Away for me again, where I go and see it at the theaters like 3 times because it is so amazing.
I can't wait. |

That means virtually no advertising for it so you will have to check the back pages of your local newspapers to see if and where.

But that the point of a small theater release. Since the DVD is out, Disney doesn't expect to make million of dollars on this film. If anything, Disney is making a smart move, one of the smartest moves in Anime marketing in the US by far. Bringing a movie from the 80's into theaters that's already on DVD? Disney's doing this for the fans, I respect them now more than ever before. |

Or they also could be doing this because the DVD sales surpassed expectations or they see the wide appeal this movie could have on the American public. I don't think this is just for the fans of the movie, but I am certainly not going to bash them for releasing in theaters, which I will go see.

As for the theatrical release - if they have it playing near me, I will most certainity go see it. If only to encourage them to put anime on the big screen more often |

[/url] It looks like Nausicaa is 14th in sales for last week. Not bad at all for a 20 year old movie. As for the number of units, who knows where that is. |

DVD Scan used to give DVD sales charts that didn't give the number of units sold but did give the percentage of units sold compared to the number one for that week. But, in real terms, the bottom of the top ten usually sells only a small fraction of what was at the top sells. I believe, and I did research this once, the highest Spirited Away placed was 4th, and it had about 12% of the sales of that week's biggest-selling DVD, Die Another Day.
Anyway, JiJi McPaws is most likely completely correct, this is a gift for those fans who want to see it on the big screen, and it will only be in those metropolitan areas where Disney thinks there would likely be enough demand for it. I don't think it will be on a fraction of the number of screens that Howl's Moving Castle will likely be on (I'm guessing Howl will get something along the lines of 300-500 screens). EDIT: Oh, wait, that link in the post above is to the charts I was talking about. So Nausicaa, in its first week, sold 20% of the number of units that Shark Tale sold in its third week? Not bad, but remember that sales of Shark Tale were extremely front-loaded, and, if we could compare first week to first week, the percentage for Nausicaa would be much smaller. Next week's charts will probably have Bambi at the top, so the percentages for even the rest of the top five will probably be smaller than this week. EDIT II: Oh, it's "VideoScan". That's why my searches for "DVDScan" failed to find any charts. EDIT III "So Nausicaa, in its first week, sold 20% of the number of units that Shark Tale sold in its first week?" Please note that I made a mistake and it should read "...Shark Tale sold in its third week?" |

I understand, however small theater releases AREN'T money makers. It could be to help DVD sales however BVHE's sales record is already in very high numbers for Nausicaa so that defeats the purpous. They may be doing it to help ticket sales for Howl's moving castle, which will be released on a much higher scale of theaters. |
