I wonder if there'll even be another Katsucon. I hope there is, but there was a lot of damage done to the venue, or so I heard, from drunk people completely losing control of themselves.

I don't think it was THAT much damage. A hole in the wall about the size of a hammerhead and some minor flooding apparently. Stupid shit, but I seriously hope that isn't enough to end the con for good.

My friend was at Katsucon & I was told that there was an evacuation due to a fire.

That video was marvelous, I have never really been to a con event before; but seeing the videos is the next best thing.

Though, why throw an evacuation party is beyond me.

There was an ACTUAL fire in the building(apparently an electrical fire in the maid cafe), so the "evacuation party" was more people just trying to make the best out of a pretty shitty situation. It was 15 degrees Fahrenheit outside and no one wanted to be out there. Especially when a lot of us were being interrupted from good panels and the like.

I haven't seen any mention of drunks damaging property. Most of the arguments is about evacuees swamping the local businesses escaping from the freezing cold, and expectations from the local businesses and from the evacuees.

They're likely referring to this.

That's exactly what I mean. No doubt the people who operate that hotel would've been pretty angry seeing those cases of unnecessary property damage. But I guess it depends on how used they are to that sort of thing and if the Katsucon organizers will foot the bill. When damage like that happens, it's the responsibility of the people who organize the venue. Even then though, that means ticket prices for upcoming Katsucons (provided there will be more, though I'm fairly sure there will) will go up to help pay for repairs to the location.

It's damage that a few people make that everyone else then has to pay for.

I kind of forgot how cold it was out there though (temperatures are in the eighties Fahreinheit around here), so all the more impressed I am at these cosplayers for showing so much skin in such weather. I don't know how they do it.

Yeah, being right next to the Potomac/Chesapeake with the way that it channels the wind directly toward the Harbor makes it pretty miserable for about 3 months out of the year. Fortunately, the Gaylord National hotel and convention center is massive and has enough spots to hold everyone at the con plus a decent choice of food, so unless you really didn't prepare at all, and need to go into town for something, you have no reason to leave the building at all(unless there is a fire and you are evacuated, of course...).

But yeah, it's just unnecessary stupid damage that should never have happened. It reflects badly on the entire community. That being said, the fact that this level of damage is news, is actually a good thing, in my opinion. When you have thousands of young adults and teens in one spot for an entire weekend, and this is all of the damage, that's not terrible. I'm not justifying it, but I'm surprised(and very glad) that this kind of stuff is actually unusual and shocking.
