Lowering the voting age is always a bad idea, in my opinion. Too ignorant of the world and too easy to brainwash... if you're going to encourage people to vote, you should also encourage them to be educated about the things they're voting for.

Even current voters aren't generally educated about things they vote for. You think kids are the only one that are ignorant of the world and easy to brainwash? Competence is no requirement to vote. There are many teenagers more knowledgeable about politics than the average adult. In the US a 16 year old can make a financial contribution to a political campaign, volunteer to make phone calls or knock on doors for a candidate, write letters to elected officials, attend political rallies, display bumper stickers, signs, and other campaign paraphernalia, but they are considered to be too incompetent to vote? That doesn't make sense. Here's a longer case if you are interested. Do people need to be more educated on these matters? Yes. Does opening it to younger voters impede that? No. |

Young people are the ones who will be living in the world they're voting for, though. They're obviously much more aware of THEIR issues and what THEY want than the old politicians who are on their way out of life. Don't really understand why the anime companies decided to use incest to compel people to vote, though. |

Here's hoping the charming powers of Kirino will motivated the new generation of 18-year-olds to assess the political issues at hand and vote!

Prior to reading the article, I would say among most younger voters, Kirino would have a better chance of winning an election from the LDP and likely do a better job than be despite being 2D, not real, and as a kid not old enough to vote herself. After reading the article, once again, I've nearly been led astray by another LDP shill.
The second part of my reply I'm putting behind a cut (spoiler) cause it's a bit of a generational/political rant that runs a little off topic. spoiler[
No offense, the argument is not that a matter of incompetence but rather the lack of life experience to make long term choices affecting society at large. Children as young as five have the reflects/motor coordination skills to operate an automobile, but children are not permitted to drive because they lack the cogitative functionality to make life altering decisions, and lack experience to comprehend the results of action or inaction. Frankly, the older I get and after having to teach several of my own children to drive, I sorely wished that the minimum driving age were raised from 16 to 18 in the US. There is a hell of a lot more distractions for young drivers on the road now than thirty plus years ago, thanks to technology. Just to note getting back OT, my generation made the same argument that we were old enough to go to war and die in Nam, but couldn't drink a beer. Note, that not only has the minimum drinking age of 21, not been repealed in the US, but states are also imposing the 21 minimum age to smoke tobacco (Hawaii) or pot. So, yeah... I think 18 is a nice number for the US, as well as Japan. 16, no thank you. ] PS Feel free to read up on the LDP, Japan's version of the Republicans, and come back and tell me if you think using anime to push a strong sense of right wing nationalism toward 18 years olds is a good idea. My grandfather always said, if you're young and are a conservative, or are old and a liberal, then yer priorities in life are flipped; and that you might want to see to that. |

The modern LDP can't be compared to average Republicans but can be compared to the alt-right, especially with Abe and his delusions of the past in office.

Life experience doesn't necessarily give one better judgement politically. Now I've been old enough to vote for several years, but I'm still young, just turned a quarter century. As you might tell from some of my other posts, I consider myself to be well informed about politics and world affairs. A guy I work with who is 22 years older than me wants to vote for Trump. Even if you are not American, you can probably tell that those twenty two years of life experience have not resulted in better judgement than me on such matters. Even aside from personal anecdotes, there are plenty of kids that know more about politics than the average adult. Yes kids shouldn't be allowed to drink or do drugs or drive, but voting does not present the same public health hazards as those. If you think kids will vote stupidly, I'll just say most people do anyway.

Young people are far more informed about politics nowadays than in the past due to to power of the internet where they can research candidates and make informed decisions regarding policies and platforms that they agree with. This is mostly for state and national elections though. Local government elections remain a mystery for practically everyone due to the near complete obfuscation of information on candidates and reliance on political party alone and perhaps a few TV advertisements if in a big city, which is unfortunate. However this lack of information affects all voters of all ages, not just the youth vote. |

I'd rather have Kirino telling me to go and Vote then watch another political ad on TV all they do is trash talk about the other candidates.

Nah, if anything indifference is its strength. Now I'm not directing this at you specifically per se but if you don't vote, why should a politician give a shit what you think. Non voters have as much effect on how politicians do their jobs (or not as the case may be) as random strangers who aren't clients or customers do on how you do your job, which is to say little to none. In the US at least, many people could give a shit about voting, especially outside presidential years, and guess what? That means politicians who could give a shit about what most people think but do care about what their neoliberalism loving donors think get elected. Thus more such things get done, some get discouraged by politicians doing such things, don't bother to vote and we come full circle. Now unfortunately one vote probably doesn't matter, but one doesn't have much room to complain that politicians don't listen if you don't bother to speak. |

It's not so much about age as it is about life experience. People could be young or old and have drastically similar or different political views. A 23 year-old who grew up on a farm may have an entirely different perspective as me, who grew up near a city. The way we grow up and the influences on our young (and current) lives give us our reason to act, not our age. I can tell you that I know far more political information than my parents, even though I've only voted once in my life.

Ah, for the Ministry of Internal Affairs. Kirino is known to keep it in the family.
