Viewers criticized casting the character as the owner of a bar when she's supposed to become the immortal queen of Crystal Tokyo at age 22.

Simple solution, this is a different universe with a different ending where she owns a bar.

Also it's a damn fictional commercial suck it up and get over it.

Pedophile spotted.

Those were fine. I'd vote for Golgo over Abe.

commercials with cultural icons are definitely subjective to "hit or miss" scenarios, the US has such commercials with say Geico doing Dora the Explorer or Europe playing in the background, myself I find them benign enough but I suppose for some it can be taken as "selling out" the image.

I don't know, I guess I just brush it off as a joke, and leave it at that. I wouldn't expect commercials like this to be terribly faithful to source material. Plus, the one with Golgo is pretty funny to me.

And this, ladies and gentlemen, is why we can't have nice things.

EVER.

Even though they didn't quite make sense, I still thought they were amusing commercials.

None of that really bothers me. But they'd better stay away from Optimus Prime.

On the other hand, they can't do worse than Michael Bay.

Eh... I don't really mind at all. Have they ever read the Parallel Sailor Moon side story? It shows their lives as if they lived them normally and had children. This is somewhat like that. The only thing I don't like is that she looked nothing like Usagi. They could have at least gave her her iconic odango hairstyle. :/ She didn't even need the pigtails, just the buns.

So...is the joke that none of these actors look remotely close to their anime/manga counterparts or that this is what they would look like in Modern Japan (example Usagi doesn't have blonde pigtails and Astro Boy/Man is actually wearing clothes)?

It's not disrespectful to change the "look" of iconic characters, just odd seeing them in the "real world". Golgo 13 ad was pretty funny and ironic considering his previous profession. Laughing

Easy, they just implanted Astro's memories into a new body via mircochip or something. Jeez, has no one in Japan read fan fiction? Also, that must be a typo since the very first chapter of the manga was about Tenma selling Astro to the circus!!

I thought Joe was dead (If it's over 40 years old, it's not a spoiler)?

Yes, none of these phone commercials are really faithful to the original works, but I'm unmoved by them. Commercials are designed simply for advertising rather than faithfully paying homage to a show.

Holy shit. They are literally complaining that a parody commercial depicting characters as working adults isn't accurate to the source material? How does a person that profoundly stupid even function? Like, how have they not all just wandered into traffic or something?

You know, everything is disrespectful and offensive these days.

I honestly found the ads very interesting (and at the same time couldn't even see how this is disrespectful. If the ads show Usagi turned into call girl, yeah that's probably disrespectful... But then self-published comics usually shows anime characters in such situation and the comics sell well and nobody says it's disrespectful. Because it fits their taste more when anime characters turned into nympho than a proper working adult.)

Idk japanese but 'disrespectful' seems a bit much; it's not the same as legit offensive stuff like black face or something. I get the joke but idk the characters looking nothing like they're supposed to sort of ruins the comedy it'd be way more hilarious to see Ashita no Joe with that silly haircut in live action or blonde odango usagi running the bar. people are just pissed its out of character. Which is kinda true I mean Usagi can't even walk and chew gum at the same time, let alone run a bar.
