+ A unique vision of the future, with an endearing cast of characters

Well said. However, you failed to mention that the character designs in Stellvia were done by director Tatsuo Sato, who also directed Nadesico and Azumanga Daioh, two other series with strong characters. So it comes as no surprise that Stellvia is more character-driven than your average space drama.

Quote:
One thing that really sets Stellvia apart from the average space anime is that the characters look decidedly cute rather than realistic.

If real teens were in charge of saving the world, they would freak out.

Quote:
For a series made in 2003, the blending between 2-D and CGI animation is disappointing,

Well, Xebec is not Gonzo, you know Wink

Quote:
The English dub of Stellvia, while passable, has its priorities in the wrong places: the secondary characters, such as teachers, sound very competent, but the central characters of Shima and Arisa suffer from amateurish voice acting.

I'm pretty sure that Carrie Savage and Lucy Hudson (Shima and Arisa respectively) appreciate your support.

Quote:
Despite the clever futuristic designs, the animation in Stellvia drags the visual style down a few notches. As mentioned before, the flight scenes look fine in motion, but the same can't be said for the 2-D work. The character animation, while not glaringly choppy, is just the bare minimum needed to make things look convincing. The storyboarding relies too much on plain, straight-on camera angles, with no signs of creativity in the way the scenes are directed

Then why did you grade the artwork an "A-" if you thought it was weak?

Overall, I enjoyed watching Stellvia, and looking forward to Volume 2 in December.

Honestly, I can see the gripe with the dubs. However, I usually have issues with the english dubs in the first place, so that's negligible. My only real beef in the subs is one of honorifics. You that have the DVD know what I'm talking about and either care or don't care. I'm one of those that don't care. They did a decent job with the subs, so I'm happy.

Overall, I think the reviewer shouldn't jump to conclusions. The series DOES start out a little slow and even I, a HUGE stellvia fan, usually skip over the first 4 episodes when rewatching. The good stuff comes in DVD 2 and onward.

I'm interested in what the review of DVD 2 is going to be like, seeing as all who had it on preorder from TSRI had it shipped to them Dec. 1 (a big happy surprise for me, since I was one of those people) and the official release date (Dec. 7) has already passed.

Kiddy Grade was another series that started slowly and got very interesting (around Episode 8, which is on the third volume), and I loved watching that series as much as I'm loving Stellvia. The series was very popular in Japan last season because of the strong character relations and good storylines. You can't expect the audience to be rushed into the plot of the series right away; the first four episodes were designed to set up the plot of the series. Stellvia is a 26-episode series, not a 4-episode OVA.

I highly agree, both about stellvia and about Kiddy Grade (another series I like alot. still haven't gotten it, since I'm waiting for the series boxed set first).

Like I said, stellvia starts getting good with dvd 2 and onward, so the slow eps in the first disc are necessary as character developers so that the story can still have it's deep characters even when it gets kicked into high gear, because of the character development that has already taken place and is still being built on.

If you haven't already, you might want to take a look at Infinite Ryvius. I'm a huge Ryvius fan and I'm saddened that so few people I've talked to know about this wonderful series. I was actually referred to Stellvia by a site that compared the two. They have a similar premise:
Quote:
A disastrous shock wave caused by a star severely crippled planet Earth. However, mankind continued to strive on, and has developed technology to survive through a future wave.
Many generations later, students are sent to space station academies to train for life in space, which is essential to the continued existence of mankind.
However, the differences between Stellvia and Ryvius are immediatly apparent, as in Ryvius the space academy is sabatoged and the students must survive on their own in the spaceship Ryvius. It's been described as Lord of the Flies in space, but it is so much more than that.

I'm glad to hear that Stellvia will pick up the pace. Ryvius suffers the same problem with having a large ensemble cast, an although the destruction of the space academy in episode 1 forces the action, there is quite a slowdown as the characters begin to develop over the course of the series... the finale is such a climax I bought the last two DVD's at once and had my own mini-marathon to the end.

Actually, I picked up Infinite Ryvius several months ago and loved it. Excellent series, IMO. Stellvia does not let itself fall into the trap of having TOO large of a character ensemble. Mainly, you'll have about FOUR characters that you get really deep into: Kouta, Shima (shipon), Ayaka, and Yayoui (sp?). However, the focus usually rests on Shima and Kouta during the second half of the series, though they don't focus on those two to the exclusion of the others.

Stellvia does a great balancing act of all it's characters, but still is able to keep the focus and intensity on the most primary characters to the story. I'm looking forward to DVD 3 so I can see how well they did that one (remember, I've already seen stellvia, so this is an exercise in seeing how well Geneon did with it. so far, I'm quite pleased).

Basroil Elite: I've heard a lot of positive feedback about Ryvius, so I will definitely rent Volume 1 and check it out.

Sir_Brass: What about Arisa, the flamboyant free spirit with the Yami Yugi-inspired hairstyle? She's a major player in the series as well (and also happens to be my favorite character).
