FUNimation should probably finish up DB and YYH before releasing another long series on the market.

Or... they could release a few long series all at once so fans don't have to wait as long. They're not exactly lagging on any of their current engagements.

It's just gonna be tough for them to make a quick return on Kodoma when they already have two long series like FMA and Conan.

Yu Yu Hakusho has like 13 more episodes to go before it's all done. It's basically a done deal for them outside of DVD authoring and sales at this point.

Then again, what percentage of people are into either YYH/DB and well as Kodocha? Is there much overlap? Or are these two series that would run ideally together?

I'll gamble the marketing people and those with the numbers have a better idea than you or I on it.

Again, are these series that really compete with each other? Is FUNi losing money from Conan and it's going into the FMA pile? Is Kodocha going to do poorly because FMA's running and people are going there instead?

Multiple long series can run at the same time without impacting the other, especially if they're coming from the same company. Four long series can easily be released without directly competing with each other in an 8 week/2 month span without hitting the other, especially if they're all from completely different genres and intended audiences.

Hmm... hopefully this'll mean that ADV will expediate their release of the second half of Super GALS!, since I always see Super GALS! described as the show to tide you over until Kodocha is released, even if the characters in Super GALS! are half a decade older than Sana and company.

I seem to be one of the few people who have seen largish chunks of both and actually prefers Super GALS! between the two of them.

When did Kodocha get licensed?

I think it was announced at AnimeExpo in 2003. If not AX, one of the other biggies.

EDIT: Oh, it was at Anime Boston in April.

Hmmm... Kodocha might be a series worth buying. Never seen it though.

I don't exactly know-although I do notice an equal amount of fan art for DB and YYH in Jump-but I'm assuming that FUNimation is hoping for at least the same overlap that occured with Fruits Basket or CCS. CCS came out when the market was still ripe for more female-oriented anime, but at this point, it's becoming a little saturated. (Moreso in the manga market, but anime could follow any time now.) Part of encouraging the fanbase to grow is to give it some breathing room; and if you release too many lengthy series at once,
consumers will be overwhelmed by it alll and either be more selective or withdraw completely.

Yes, they certainly made Conan a ratings success.

Not yet, but they were obviously hoping for more of a crossover from the DB and YYH camps.

Not necessarily poorly in ratings, but possibly poorly in sales.
If you analyze the "success" of Conan and FMA, perhaps FUNimation overestimated the international appeal of certain shows, and just focused too much on the episode count instead. DBZ's unfortunately one of the few truly successful 100+ episode anime in the West, and I don't see the point in trying to flood a market which isn't big enough to sustain more shows of that length. (Hell, I'm still wondering how Woodhead keeps UY going-though he probably wonders too-because it's obvious that most of the fanbase for UY barely consists of fans from Inu Yasha and Ranma.) This is coming from a Lupin fan who genuinely wants to see all 155 episodes of the second series released here, but who knows it depends on how well the first ten volumes sell. Ironically, as much as I complained about Geneon in the past, I actually felt only officially releasing the first 52 eps was probably a realistic move on their part. (Then of course, they licensed Slam Dunk, and where they go from there is still speculative.) While I'm glad that Fruits Basket was an unexpected sales success for FUNimation, I still feel they should be testing the waters with more shows with a medium episode count, instead of banking on Kodocha so quickly.

Again, if that were the case, then Conan and FMA would be as big or almost as big as DBZ. At this point, I think anime companies should consider using more focus groups before they automatically assume what's big in Japan is gold in the U.S. It'd save them a lot of money and disappointment.

They might be from different genres, but there's no doubt that the intended audiences are the same. Shoujo's got an adequate fanbase here, but it's not enough to bail out an ailing company as it was in Japan when Sailor Moon saved Bandai. I'm just glad it's enough to see One Piece go down in flames at the polls.

Kodocha vs. Super Gals!? Oh please... Kodocha is far and away one of my favorite anime and in no way, shape or form can be compared to Super Gals! Kodocha is a fantastic series that I will certainly be buying as soon as it's available. You'd be better off comparing FMA to Kodocha, IMO, because they both are excellent anime that contain wonderful story lines, characters, serious, thought-provoking situations and a big emotional impact.

p.s. I do not really want to listen to the dub of Kodocha, because I have a terrible fear of listening to voice actors fail. Not saying they will, but still...

That's precisely what I like about the vastly underrated Super GALS!, my favourite anime TV series from the past decade or so.

Kodocha, in comparison, I find to be "justa buncha kids + Zenjirou".

But, hey, "de gustibus non disputandum est".
