According to Kotaku, a Nintendo press release confirmed the 2 versions for the US release. No word on the 3rd arc.
I was interested in this, until we got the 2 versions confirmation, which makes it a no-buy. I support games with multiple directions you can go to increase replayability. I don't support games which make you choose which story you want to play before even BUYING the game.

There was never any doubt in my mind that we would be getting the separate versions in the West.
They've already confirmed that each version will be equivalent in content to Awakening, which itself was the biggest, most content-packed iteration of FE.
As long as I can get roughly the same amount of content as Awakening by paying roughly the same price as Awakening with even one version, then I'm satisfied. And if I want twice the FE content, then I'll pay twice the price to get both versions. Pricey, yes, but the content-to-price ratio makes perfect sense to me, so I really can't complain.

They'll probably do like Japan and offer the other campaigns as DLC for a lower price. Or offer them at once with a special edition

i just want the 3rd game assuming that combines the previous 2 games together into one, my experience with the save game engagement has shown that its easy to move around saves so assuming they don't put any restrictions on that my only issue with the game will be resolved.

The English version of Fire Emblem Fates sounds excellent, so that really got myself interested for it.
However...
I'm still waiting for confirmation of how the title will be sold in the U.S. If both versions of Fire Emblem Fates end up debuting separately instead of in a single cartridge, it's a no buy.

There are only two games. Are you referring to the 3rd campaign? Most people are assuming it's just a neutral storyline, where you don't align with either kingdom. It's also DLC, meaning you have to buy one of the other games before you can even get it. It's definitely not the other two combined though, it's a new story.
Japan did get a collectors edition that contained all 3 campaigns, which we might get in the West for those that want to buy everything at once.

yes thats what i meant, a collectors edition that combines all of the previous content into one, assuming that the first 2 games have enough content by themselves to constitute a full game then i'd be fine with the collectors edition costing say 1 and a half times the previous versions (double is pushing it but depending on the content it may be reasonable)

ahhhhhhhh! I want this game now!
I'm also in the camp of wanting all three story lines in one uniform package (even if it's as a collector's edition or something) I was hoping for more release info other than just the window and English title, oh well

That's just the nature of the beast; the problem with RPGs is just how much they have to translate and that they have to do that for TWO games.

the special edition is not all three in one game, it's a bundle of both games and a code for the DLC for the third route and an artbook and a limited edition card for the Fire Emblem TCG they're releasing. looking at the MSRP on it the special edition is slightly more expensive than buying both versions separately, but a little cheaper than doing that AND getting the DLC third route. altho what exactly a North American special edition would include is yet to be decided, or at least announced.
you also have to remember the third route is likely it's own game just as much as the other two are, so it's still three games and some extras for a little over the price of two games.

I've been reading the Japanese magazines and it looks like (only a spoiler to those who don't want any expectations at all) you don't have much information by that point in the game, either. All the stuff you generally find out about both sides in this intro part of the game is being previewed one issue at a time in famitsu weekly, saying that it's published to help you with your decision come release, but most people are expected to choose based on the characters they like the looks of or the general feeling they want (good vs. evil), much like how some games (presumably, they're referring to Pokemon and Youkai Watch) have you choosing the version you want before playing based on the legendaries you want or the towns you want to traverse through, etc.
Also, is that an anime cutscene I see at 1:06?

On the contrary, it's the one I'm more interested in. Plus, the classes are really interesting. I mean, the mounted unit's mount is a wooden puppet, seemingly controlled by the fingertips of its rider. They use Japanese traditional terms for the classes, even with their obvious parallels to the series' usual Western class naming schemes.
