I'm hoping Discotek's release of Free! does well. If it does, perhaps the mention of a joint-release of the FUNi dub/BD will be looked into more definitively.

I want to put the negativity aside and just focus on the positive.

i'm surprised that they're re-releasing the Patlabor movie dvd. And at the same price as the limited edition one on amazon but without all the extra stuff

Wait, so when Diskotek mentioned a "possible dub release," they've meant a FUNi dub-co-op? Or just a dub in general?

I remember reading about a possible dub, although I never imagined working with FUNimation for it. I assumed Sentai would be handling any future dub of Free. Or am I mistaken?

Funi has the rights and is dubbing the 2nd season Free! Eternal Summer. The Discotek real is with Crunchyroll as they (Crunchyroll) hold broadcast and home video rights for the first season.

Discotek is only getting out a bare bones DVD release for Crunchy as they do not do home video releases anymore. Funi still has the option to release it with a dub and on Bluray as long as they can negotiate with the licensor down the line but nothing has been announced yet.

I was going off a response they had on Facebook, mentioning only the possibility of doing a dub in conjunction with someone else.

Given that FUNi has the release rights for season 2 I am more or less assuming it'd be co-op'ed by them, although you're right, I don't know anything in that regard for certain.

'Bare-bones' is an understatement. Mine came in yesterday and this thing is two official logos away from me calling it a bootleg. I'm still telling people to buy it because I want a Blu-Ray in the future (Free! is too damn pretty to be stuck on DVD), but good lord, it's a mess.

Still waiting for mine to ship, but that is sad to hear. I mean normal Discotek's releases are not anything special packaging wise, but I was hoping for someone a little better for a very sought after title.

I got mine yesterday too and I have to agree about it looking almost like a bootleg. The packaging has some heft to it but the front cover is just atrocious. It looks like someone took some original art for the series and traced over it and then took a marker and colored it in. It doesn't even look like Rei! Then there's the 'Season 1 Episodes 1-12 English Subtitled Edition' plastered in big bolded letters on the front and sides. It kinda adds to the bootleg flavor I guess they were going for.

Honestly, I would prefer if Funi somehow snags the bluray rights (along with the FrFr shorts) and dubs it. I don't know if companies can divide a series like that when licensing but it's something I would prefer to happen.

That is very disheartening to hear.

I don't know if that's something they can do either but I dearly want it to happen if the possibility exists. If FUNi releases Free! seasons 1 and 2, the FrFr shorts, the OVA from ES, and the upcoming movie - they can have just all of my money. No regrets.

For anyone who hasn't seen Discotek's release, Amazon has a high-res shot of the cover.

Is that really the cover?

I didn't think they would've went with it, but good lord, it's hideous.

I definitely would rather have them work with funi, ESPECIALLY for a Blu Ray.

It is. I first saw it on Discotek's official Facebook page.

I'm hoping the subtitles are well done at least, so that anyone who wants purely subbed DVDs will be happy and support the series.

There was also a response to possibility-of-BD/dub question:
"Discotek Media: Right now we are allowed to release DVD only with Japanese language and English subtitles. Someone else MAY do a dub. It might be CR, or it might be another company. Same thing with Blu Ray. Or we may do a dub and a Blu Ray one day. We are just getting this out on the market for people who don't mind DVD and Japanese w/subs now so fans can own if they want. Anything else will be announced in the future."

@tygerchickchibi:

Sublicensing this to Funi definitely would've been a good move since it also would've been a good bargaining chip, but my guess is that Crunchy might lack the BD rights or Funi absolutely refused to do anything but a full-on license transfer.

That S1 of Free is so hideous it looks like something for $5 from China town. Talk about bare bones, yuck...Give this to Funi and get a nice blu ray dubbed release Evil or Very Mad

Just found the Japanese DVD on Amazon and the cover art Discotek used is indeed official art, as shown on the back cover of the Jpn DVD.

^That's not the official Japanese DVD release. As far as I'm aware, they haven't released a complete collection and none of the blu-ray or DVD singles came with English and Chinese subtitles like that does. If they had released Free! with english subtitles I wouldn't have gotten Discotek and Crunchyroll's DVD subtitle only release since I already imported all the blu-rays. Maybe it's the Chinese release? Still, it has a better front cover than the Discotek/Crunchy DVD.
