hmm....
Attack on Titan's universe is taking place where nowadays lies Germany and this is the reason why almost EVERYONE is caucasian and has European (mostly German) name because probably German ancestors built those walls. Another good example why AoT is placed in Europe is the building style, all city buildings are designed in Middle-Age European style. Asians are very rare inside the walls (probably there werent many Asians in Germany when the walls came up) and during the timeline of the anime and manga, only Misaka's mother was the last known living pure blood Asian inside the wall, so Misaka is very "rare" both by name (Japanese name) and race and this was an important factor in Misaka's life (not giving away spoilers). So I aks you, why in the name of Wall Maria do I see Japanese styled buildings and only Japanese people in the trailers? It's like asking Angelina Jolie to play Cleopatra...whats next? Martin Luther King played by a white dude? Its not the same ... |

SIGH. Look, unless there's been some drastic change I wasn't aware of, Japan's pockets are not as deep as Hollywood's when it comes to making live-action films. Filming in their own country and keeping auditions to local actors (and I guarantee you there probably aren't many caucasian actors hanging around Japan) makes more sense from a financial perspective. I'm honestly surprised Japan is moving forward with such a huge undertaking to begin with, so IMHO expecting them to devote even more money to the project than they already are is unreasonable.
Also, if you're expecting a two-movie series to actually spend focus on Mikasa's name and race (especially considering a certain someone else won't even be in this movie), prepare to be disappointed. They'll clearly be changing a LOT from the manga/anime. A huge portion of the supporting cast apparently won't even be present. This is probably going to be more along the lines of the live-action Gantz films (also a case where only two movies meant lots of changes since it was a manga with hundreds of chapters). |
