Lots of articles mention that it received a standing ovation, but not how long.

no regular movie recieves a 6-minute standing ovation. I think it's stupid that Howl's Moving Castle didn't win the top award. Then again, I haven't seen either Howl's Moving Castle or the film that won the top award. I still cannot wait until we get Howl's Moving Castle and the others over here!

I think Miyazaki's award was for technical contribution or soemthing like that (the translation says "technical contribution").

The Golden Osella is awarded in different categorweis every year, including best director, best actor, etc...

When there's more details available about the award (I was working of minute-old news) I'll post exactly what it was for.

Hum...As I'm not an expert to Film Festivals (yup, and has been celebrated near here)...Well, I don't know exactly what has won, but at least, it won something. Or that's what I believe...Anyway, for people who like Eastern Asia (instead of just Japan)...What finally did that Korean movie? A few hours ago, it was which had more chances of winning...

I'm very happy that "Howl's Moving Castle" was recognized at Venice Film Festival (though I was hoping it would win the Golden Lion).

See, the thing about the Golden Lion award is that there were plenty of other movies in official competition besides Howl's Moving Castle, and, surprisingly, some non-Ghibli films also have critical merit, like Vera Drake (though I doubt I'll care much for that one due to the subject matter).

Oh yeah, also on the issue of applause, I wouldn't claim that none of the applause was for the quality of Howl's Moving Castle, but the producer, Toshi Suzuki, was in attendance, so some of the applause would also be out of basic courtesy. At Fantasia this year, Gate to Heaven and the live-action Cutie Honey, which were both cute films but not exactly contenders for serious awards, both got sustained applause for a minute or two because various members of cast and crew were present and it would be impolite not to applaud.

Its too bad Howl didn't win top prize, but Mike Leigh's film shouldn't be ignored. Leigh is among the best working directors of the past thirty years, and he directed two of the best movies of the 90s: Naked and Secrets & Lies.

I'm naturally more enthusiastic about Howl than I am for the new Leigh film, though.

I'm not saying that other movies were bad or didn't deserve to win, it's just that I was rooting for "Howl's Moving Castle". Early reviews were very positive too (so there's no need to be sarcastic). I'm sure "Vera Drake" and other movies were great. As for "Vera Drake's" subject matter - it is also not my cup of tea (though I try to stay open-minded).

I wasn't being sarcastic to you, I was being sarcastic to setzer's assertion that "I think it's stupid that Howl's Moving Castle didn't win the top award." which, in time, might be a good opinion to have, but, right now, most people here wouldn't know much of anything about the other contenders, most of which haven't played outside of festivals yet.

Remember, even Spirited Away's award at Berlin was tied with another movie - "Bloody Sunday." Great, overlooked movie.

So it's not impossible to imagine that there just might've been better movies than Howl at Venice. Besides, it DID win an award, so what's everybody griping about?

And hey, I'm just glad that stupid "controversial" movie with Nicole Kidman didn't win squat.

I still think Ghost in the Shell 2 losing at Cannes was the bigger snub, because I didn't feel Farenheit 9/11 deserved to win the Palme. And no, I'm not going to turn this into a political thread, because I liked F 9/11, but it's not award-winning material IMHO.

I haven't seen either of the films so i can't judge and I know Spirited Away got the golden bear, but maybe they can't accept an animated film to win.

Have you actually seen "Birth" (that's the name of the movie)? Or are you judging it solely based on it's premise?
