For comparison, how's the American comic book market doing?

Not really surpring, given the fact that not only (mainly) One Piece and Shingeki no Kyojin were constantly at the sales charts' Top 3 throughout the year, but they've kept high numbers as well.

You can't really compare the manga market to the comic market. Comics released per year are significantly fewer. Also the only stats available are from the Diamond publisher. No digital stats, which is more popular than tangible comics, are given. For reference though, comics sales for 2014 was above $500mil.

Well the hard part is distinguishing sales of the normal, 30ish page soft paper Monthly comics from the actual Graphic Novels. There's a clear distinction with the Japanese market- you have Magazine sales and you have Manga sales. That $500mil quote is definitely the combine amount of the month issues and Graphic Novels, making it a lot harder to tell. Graphic novels typically don't sell nearly as much in the US as in Japan and some other countries. However, sales wise, it's been pretty healthy in these recent years. |
