I knew it was a good idea to give the second season a try and definitely doesn't disappoint so far. One of my favorites this season and likely a top 10 in my book this year.

I'm really glad to see someone who actually has a positive view of Try's female cast. So far I've seen way too many people bellyaching about how Fumina is a damsel in distress because she gets into dangerous situations (danger on the battlefield, who'da thunk it?) and is aided by her male teammates.

Gundam Build Fighters Try is just amazing, especially as a Gundam fan. This might seriously be my favorite anime of the season.

Not only a positive review for a Gundam series but an A+ rating for the first 3 episodes at that? Seriously someone pinch me cause I don't believe what I'm seeing. A bloody Gundam series is being praised instead of ripped apart from every angle top to bottom.
I could kind of do without a continuation of this whole female empowerment angle that ANN's writers seem to be on about this season, but hey an honest to god nod in the direction of a Gundam series is something I'll gladly take as a long time fan of the franchise cause it almost never happens anymore period. |

OK, that BS. Fumina gets "into trouble" because she's the support unit. Usually, the opposing team will try and take out the support unit first. Sekai is the CCE and Yuuma is LR. The team is perfectly balanced.

This sequel is pretty good so far; hopefully it will manage to top the 1st season and explains in more detail the whole deal about Reiji's planet and the alien material that allowed the battles to take place.
But if it doesn't, I'll still be satisfied if it's as well executed as its predecessor with charismatic characters, good sense of humor and classic sports anime tropes. And of course, the endless amount of mobile suit fanservice. |

I think for Gundam its warranted as the franchise has always been focused on boys and even if a woman was piloting a Gundam, she was a side character. Still no female lead in a series that has any consequences though for the characters though. Also, why are you always so critical to anyone who might possibly hold a negative opinion on Sunrise mecha? You accuse me of hating everything even though I don't, but you're even more tenacious about shutting down anyone who might have reservations or complaints. |

Really happy to see this show getting episode reviews. the first Build Fighters series ended up being one of my favorites from the last year, and it's exactly because of what Lauren says - the passion is infectious and exciting and just really positive. I have a smile on my face from the moment I hit play and TRY is doubling down on that.
I think part of why the series works so well is that it's structured like a sports series more than anything else. It's built upon the fun and excitement of playing (or watching) a sport in the same way Haikyu!! did, and the fun is in following the characters as they pursue and enjoy what they're passionate about. That's the kind of fun you just have to be a major sourpuss to get really negative about. I also totally agree with what Lauren said about the female cast. I liked Aila and China in the first series, but it's definitely refreshing to see more girls and women enjoying the sport on its own. |

As one of those gundam newbies (heck I think I'm even one of Lauren's anecdotal stories ) this one of the fall shows I was looking forward to the most and so far I've been grinning like an idiot every Wednesday and throughly enjoying it. I think lossthief is on the right track here, the show feels a lot like a sports show, abet one that shows characters off the field more often than most shows do, and it really is just so passionate about how much fun the characters are having and just being silly in the process (seriously, was I was the only one who thought "team song dynasty vase" was an Ouran reference of all things, especially after seeing what the rest of the girls school looked like?). I am surprised to here that this is the very first gundam series with a female lead however, I've gotten used to seeing female leads/very very important female supporting characters in other mecha shows late so I had no idea this was a franchise first, I was just glad it was more girls who were playing the game because it was fun instead of just for an outside reason!
One little thing, I've been following GBFT discussions on some other forums and according to one, Build Burning isn't supposed to be a G-Gundam reference, they hadn't realized that was the name the mech had in the US! |

I HOPE YOU'RE HAPPY NOW THAT YOU'VE CRUSHED ALL MY DREAMS. So maybe the director had no idea what Burning Gundam was. But, somebody must have tipped him off during the creation process, right? Why else would Sekai write to his master who is training IN THE FREAKING GUIANA HIGHLANDS or ask people he is beating up if they have seen a PICTURE OF HIS SIBLING and let's not forget the shadowy figure with HAIR JUST LIKE DOMON'S in the OP. I am just not ready to give up. I see G-Gundam everywhere. Didn't one of the Team Song Dynasty Vase girls' gunpla look a little like Nobell? |

See, I don't see that as a problem since Sekai and Yuuma get into their own scrapes, too. I certainly didn't think Reiji was a damsel in distress when Yuki had him cornered last season. Women are people. They are allowed to have weaknesses and not kick ass every single minute and still be good characters that I want to root for. |

Nice to see Build Fighters getting some of the attention it deserves -- it might have the skeleton of a straightforward merchandise-pushing sports or battling kids' show but it's very well-executed. As you say, it really makes the passion surrounding the fictional hobby tangible and exciting.
If you'll indulge me for a paragraph of awful Gundam-fan pedantry (and really, you can skip this if you like), there has been a Gundam story with a female lead before: the Ecole du Ciel manga which tracks its heroine's growth from a troubled student to a hardened ace. But of course that is only print, not television. One could make a shaky case for Turn A Gundam, in that a lot of the character growth and change in that show happens to the three main female characters rather than to the pilot hero, and in that it presents a much more positive picture of women as leaders than most other TV Gundam... but it would be a shaky case. Okay, pedantry over.
Not the only one! Though it also made me think of M'Quve, the general in the original Mobile Suit Gundam who collects ancient vases and pilots a Gyan. But the brief shots of the school itself were very Ouran, so I think what we might be looking at here is a cunning parallel allusion which draws two things together at once! |

Yeah, GBF was one of my favorite shows the season it aired, and while I am enjoying many shows this season, Try has been a start to stop smile. I go into the show with my baggage from that day, and I leave with a big smile for how much a fandom can give. I feel purely positive when each episode ends.
Sure there's girls into Gunpla in this show, and there's a variety of them. Including bodytype! Gyanko has a few extra pounds when you see her stand in front of her teammates. I remember in Chihayafuru the main rival put on weight in the off-season, but once she was playing against the main characters again she reverted to a twig. Build Fighters welcomes fans of all types! |
