Great review, Lauren! This is probably my guilty pleasure of the season, solely on the music.

Came to this show not expecting much but I had nothing better to do.
By the end of the first episode I'd decided I had to keep watching.
It's a good FUN show with likeable character and the music's not bad. Good to see it getting some coverage.

"Guilty pleasure" is such a good way to describe it. Bakumatsu Rock is no epic saga, but it does music well.

It's the poor, POOR man's Gintama. There's so much mediocre, and the CG is sooooo bad. Most episodes are boring, BUT when they hit on comedy like the bathhouse episode or the Dark Cherry one I'm laughing for 20 minutes straight.

I love this kind of anachronistic historical anime, and I especially love Bakumatsu era anime, and Ryuoma is one of my favorite people from that era, but when they somehow managed to make even the fan service-laden first concert boring, the series was on notice. When they didn't progress much in the episodes after that, I reluctantly gave up on it.
I had hoped that the music might save it, but even that was disappointing. As you pointed out, Ryouma's songs are indistinguishable from the Shinsengumi's, but even worse they're indistinguishable from all the other seiyuu-performed pop songs anime is so fond of.
At least from your reviews I can see that dropping this was the right choice for me. For those still enjoying it, rock on!

The only reason why I`m even watching this is because of Okita. Have no interest in the music or story. Just him.

One of the best things about the show is how self-aware it is. Yes, it's incredibly cheap, stupid, ridiculous and overall bad, but the show knows it and makes the most out of it. Last week's tagline about the amount of historical inaccuracies was just brilliant.
Though tbh, I'm only in for the exploding shirts.

Well, we did get to see the Kiheitai, so it wasn't completely historically inaccurate.
But yeah, a rock(!)-et, giant snakes, "there's a super-villain who's even more evil than the guy we thought to be the super-villain!" - this show sure knows how to deliver.

I always add one show each season to my watch list that is a designated "stupid show". This is this season's. The show also had Hiroki Yasumoto.
It was an easy choice.
Have to admit most shows like this are entertaining. This one is surprisingly hilarious, though I'm not sure if all the laughing I'm doing was intentionally provoked.
Kind of wondering why there is no Saito among the Shinsengumi. Not in Gintama either....

So...Space Dandy's problem throughout numerous second season episodes. Tried to take itself seriously.

Quote: | But it's the season finale, and they did exactly the worst thing possible: Bakumatsu Rock, the anime nobody can take seriously, tried to take itself seriously. |
Episode 12:
I think the problem here isn't so much that the show started to take itself seriously but that you seemed to take it seriously all of a sudden...
To me this ep. was absolutely hilarious: rock prevailed and lead Japan to a new era filled with questionably-clothed American rockstars. THE END.
Overall this series gave me some good chuckles, so i didn't completely waste my time, i suppose.

The new American character's appearance is most likely to promote the new instalment of the Bakumatsu Rock source game series, Ultra Soul.
The new character, Matthew Perry Junior, will debut in Ultra Soul which is being released this September.

Episode 12
It definitely started to take itself seriously. A D grade is being generous. Everything was wrong about this episode, except possibly for the invention of the mosh pit.
Quote: | Who can forget the bath house rock concert, heavy on tunes and lewdness? Here's hoping the Dark Cherries, the female idol band tasked to murder the rockers to wacky results, get their own spinoff because their antics were nonstop hilarity as well. I can't neglect to mention Ryouma's flight by rocketship either. |
These are exactly the highlights of the series to me. We're so on the same page. They should have stuck to humor.

I don't know, were they? I mean, the climax had the five main boys naked with angel wings rocking in heaven and making the shogun's clothes explode.. I don't know if you can really call that "taking itself seriously"

I thought there was very little of anything like that in the last episode though. Contrast this to the bathhouse episode, which was outrageously hilarious from beginning to end. This felt like standard fight your way to the top shounen ending facing the big bad, complete with angsty drama. For me the only things that made it different from a Naruto ep were the choice of weapons and exploding clothes.
I just wish they'd gone out on a more light-hearted note.
