I wonder if Peter Cullen finds it surreal that after voicing a cartoon character for only 3 years he gets to reprise the role in the currently 13th highest grossing film franchise with 1 film this year and another already in development.
Not too mention all the adds/promotions and cartons/games. |

I don't think even Transformers can make people care about soccer.

Oh, it's not soccer, it's just the World Cup-- Advertisers think they have to tie Super Bowl commercials in with the World Cup just because every other country does, but then finds out the US doesn't care about the World Cup even when the US is playing. (I mean, twenty years ago this week, they were holding the opening ceremonies for the first US World Cup venue ever. And did we watch?...NO. Because we were all too fascinated by watching police chase a white Ford Bronco down the LA freeway, and calling all our friends and co-workers to turn on CNN and see. That's gotta say something right there. ) |

I don't think America would start caring about fudbul even if we took the Cup. It'll always be behind even tennis and golf.

I remember when they tried pumping up the Yankee-sports hype on the American Sailing Cup, because (apart from the fact that Ted Turner had money in it, and was prone to marketing delusions) some evil country had, gasp, "taken our Cup" by finally defeating us after a string of wins, and it was our red-white-and-blue duty to get it back! Erm.....nnnnnnnno. There is one sport even duller than tennis, golf, soccer, or bowling. (Although one late-nite comic had a funny line about kids watching the World Cup: "Wait, where are the moms and the juice boxes?...And why are they all spread out in the field, and not all following the ball around in a big clump? This isn't the game WE KNOW!" |

Yeah, futbol is a great and inexpensive way to force kids into exercising and team sport. Some cleats, the uniform (provided by signing up in the league, right?), shin guards, and bam, you're good to go. No need for likely far more expensive pads, sticks, bats, gloves, skates, helmets, rackets, clubs, etc, and it's far easier to play as a kid than basketball. Soccer is just primarily seen as something you force kids into and not serious competition that'll amount to anything in the future. That identity and the negative connotation of soccer mom has pretty much cemented its status here.
Oh yeah I forgot, it's also behind Nascar, and it'd be behind F1 if we got into that too. |

you know as much as I love the transformers and the live action series, I don't really feel that excited for this film. I mean the antagonists seem boring and bland, and the story seems bland too, but ill give it a shot.

15 million TV viewers in the US watched US' first 2014 World Cup match against Ghana. (That's more than the finale of Breaking Bad with 10 million.)

And when we inevitably lose:
"Oh well, I didn't like that stupid game anyway." |

Soccer as you say is a huge thing outside the North American confinements. Over here things aren't so evenly distributed between sports (like American football, baseball, hockey), it's mostly soccer.
But then again, you won't hear much noise this year. Meaningless teams are doing quite well and last world champion lost all games and got disqualified. So did England. Not sure how the US is doing, but it's one of those meaningless teams in soccer. I don't like any sport. The whole selection of a football team is pretty shitty by itself. It's like a beauty contest. |
