Best story of the day.
Animators do need their own dorms, not only to sleep at night and ease the financial burden but to provide a little bit of commendatory between each other to relieve stress. Also their salary of 10k a year is pretty much a product of corporate tyranny and should change. |

I've been waiting for you guys to post about this for a while. I also sent you guys an email about it but i'm glad you've posted about it now.
I've already contributed since for once i actually have enough money saved up to do so but this is one of the better ways to go about curbing an issue thats been apparent for a while. Really hoping they manage to reach the goal for this. |

The overworked animators who should get at least $20,000/year. A lot of the Crunchyroll subscription money should be going directly to these people.

This has been going since Ozamu Tezuka and before that since Disney (oh, you really think the people that animated Bambi were well paid and did not worked in sweat shops?) and I see no reason it will change with only good intentions. As it is many anime projects are barely outside the red (and many more are so deep in red it is not funny). Computers haven't change this since they have become so easy to use (anyone here used a computer before they had a mouse included?) that you do not need highly trained professionals to produce computer assisted animation, so they keep paying them this ultra low wages. |

Production committees aren't paying animators living wages. Doesn't help that there are many studios and who are willing to underbid each other. At least now there's the nascent JAniCA (Japanese Animation Creators Association) animators guild, that's a start.

Have you ever used computer animation software? |

Your question is rather vague, so I have to give a very broad answer. If by "animation software" you mean photoshop, paint shop pro, gimp and similar, yes and I have seen people with zero knowledge of computers use them to color images and use photos as models for drawings. It is even easier to use this tools where you can undo any error than real life brushes. in fact a local cartoonist tells me many people he meets on the internet are in awe that he knows how to use that kind of old school tools to make drawings. If you mean 3D software like maya, lightwave or blender, no, I do not know how to use them from the vast amount of anime I see each season, anime is not at the same stage Pixar is, where they have ONLY highly trained professionals using highly sophisticated 3D tools to do projects with budgets that not only dwarf any anime project you can name, but many Hollywood movie projects. So maybe some studios have someone that knows how to use said tools, but I can bet that they are not receiving high pay since their work must still must be inked, colored, etc. by a ton of other people. BTW, series like Kingdom and Knights of Sidonia IMO belong to another category besides anime since they do not look like anime, they look unnatural/creepy, maybe later on they will manage to look like anime, but atm they have not managed the exact look. |

I meant software for computer-assisted, hand-drawn 2D animation, like Animo. Photoshop and the like aren't specifically designed for animation. |

I do not have an OSX enabled computer so I have no means to run the software that you mention, so I suppose the answer would be no, I am downloading flipbook atm and it looks like it mimics traditional animation methods into the pc (just like photoshop mimics traditional drawing tools in the pc). |

The fact that they need this--that new animators get neither a living wage or a place to live from the company they work for, so they have to beg for it is pretty awful.
Putting animators in dorm housing together is a great idea. Needing to start an Indiegogo campaign to do it...are they trying to purchase a building or pay rent and living expenses for a set amount of time...? |

That is what I was wondering because 10,000 for a dorm is actually really cheap. |

Those slave wages are the only reason so many anime could be made. Start paying them more, and then it's only guaranteed hits produced from here on out, meaning kid shows that sell a bunch of toys or whatever the top selling manga overall are. |
