Oh gosh I've been wanting to see this. I remember hearing good things about it when it came out but I could be remembering wrong. It also seemed like it would never get a release here but I guess seven years later someone was like "Hey let's do this".
I am very interested. Early noitamina makes me happy. |

Here's hoping that they handle the subs properly here. I own their Saint Seiya set and while they are readable, there are times where I would have to rewind & pause the DVDs because the subs would disappear fast after the characters start talking which is very annoying.

Huh. New Video Group is releasing subbed DVDs now? That's good to hear, even if I hear their subs are really sucky on their Saint Seiya set.

I've recently finished Samurai Horror Tales, so I'd love to get this one on DVD. Here's hoping the subs are gonna be alright.

The subs themselves are perfectly fine. The translation is good, with typos being fairly uncommon (and, even then, are only a wrong letter at the worst), and any complaints about the translation itself are people whining about how it isn't exactly "1-to-1", i.e. not every single word is translated but the message is still delivered without changing any meaning. The "issue" is mainly with the timing of the subs themselves. While this issue does "fix itself" for the most part as you go through the episodes, the first disc or two do feature some timing problems such as subs not appearing on screen for too long. In the last couple of DVDs, which is where I'm continuing my watch from, the subs are just fine, with the only "quick subs" being for literal one word lines like "Seiya!" or "What?". In short, the subs are fine but could have benefited from someone just looking over the timing codes & fixing them a little. I can understand to an extent that doing this for 73 episodes might be a little much for a company that never did a release like this before, so hopefully they can spare the time to do that for 11 episodes. |

I'm hoping they'll be able to release it streaming on Hulu.

Fantastic news. Mononoke is excellent, I highly recommend checking it out. Ghost stories as mysteries that must be uncovered in order to put the spirits to rest, gorgeously and uniquely animated.
I hope ANN gives it a review, this show deserves all the attention it can get. The DVDs of Ayakashi, the show this was spun off of, are still floating around (you can get them for $9 at Rightstuf, cheaper used), so don't let the fact that this is a sequel scare you away! You don't even need to see all of Ayakashi, since it was an anthology show and only the Bakaneko arc (found on the third DVD put out by Geneon) is connected to Mononoke. |

So excited to see this confirmed! The best unlicensed anime series for years, and my most wanted anime title for a long time. It's unique, very artistic, but also very accessible.
As long as the subtitles are good, the only other thing I'd want is a Blu-ray release. Maybe down the line if the DVD release sells well enough?
Yes! The art and animation is superficially similar to that of Gankutsuou, but is much stronger in its purpose and feel—it's like watching old wood block carvings and Japanese paintings. Nothing else looks like it in anime, and unlike many other "visually stunning/eccentric" anime, it's not done as a gimmick or as a means to show off. Mononoke is a lot more organic. The soundtrack and sound design is also really effective—this is clear right off the bat in the first episode during the nighttime in the inn. The voice acting also fits right in with stage plays, which makes sense considering a lot of the stories and art design fits with kabuki theater. And yeah, I agree that while people should check out the Goblin Cat disc of Ayakashi (and it's my favorite arc of the Medicine Seller stories, being possibly the most emotional one), it's not necessary to undertand most of Mononoke (it gets referenced in the second story, and is "revisited" in the fifth and final story). |

This is one of my favorite series ever. I'm pretty excited. I will be buying these DVDs right away. Now, if someone could release Trapeze.

It's great that Mononoke is finally coming out in English language. I just can't believe well-known anime licensees didn't license this show for all these years. Definitely buried treasure overshadowed by other newer, flashy shows.
Having bought Japanese DVD box of Mononoke few years ago, I'm not too sure about buying 2-disc set for video and audio quality reasons. Besides, I'm eyeing toward blu-ray edition. |

Oh, awesome! I thought Cinedigm was just going to do nostalgic anime releases like Digimon and Yugioh, but this makes it seem like they're going into anime for reals, and I think they picked a good title to go with. I hope they get more Siren Visual stuff that never came out over here.

Kenji Nakamura has a great visual style. Unfortunately, his other shows that I've seen (C-Control and tsuritama) didn't have as big a budget, so his imagination didn't get to soar as much. The scripts weren't as compelling either . Mononoke had some excellent writers working on it.
As far as I can recall, you're right about not needing to watch Goblin Cat first. I'm not sure if Mononoke spends as much time explaining the process of the Medicine Seller's exorcisms though? You bring up an excellent topic: What is everyone's favorite arc in the series? There isn't a bad one in the bunch, but I generally prefer the two-episode stories. I feel that the pacing is snappier, which helps keep the mysteries, um, mysterious. If you put a gun to my head, I'd probably pick the incense episodes as my favorites. But the ghost babies story was really good too! |

Yes! I pre-ordered this on Amazon a few weeks ago.
The Amazon page finally has a picture of the DVD cover: Mononoke DVD Amazon Order Page I've seen Ayakashi: Samurai Horror Tales, and own Goblin Cat on DVD, but have wanted to own the Mononoke series for some time. I've seen the series and it's great. It's very surreal, and not as dark/tragic as Goblin Cat. I am so geeked to be getting this come July! =D |

Very great news, indeed. I am happy to be able to pay for this excellent series, although part of me is sad not to get all the bonus material available, especially the interviews. But that's complaining about first world problems, really.
