I panicked when I read GKids as 4Kids, lol.

Interesting though

Oh good it's being picked up. They did a really good job on From up on Poppy Hill. I'll definitely be looking forward to this.

Cool. These people actually support Midwest theatres unlike The Wind Rises's people (Disney?), so that's awesome.

So far, so good
As long as it plays near me, I don't imagine having any complaints
Last year worked out real well with From Up on Poppy Hill playing the same weekend as the Houston Japanese Festival.

<SIGH>
At least they're releasing most of these features on home video in the near future...!

You've got to get the crust out of your eyes and go online and look for a local art theater!

If they don't have one in your area, it's tough but that's the way it is.

Distribution on independent movies in general is very spotty... Don't expect to see most anime features ever popping up at your local AMC or other major chain theater unless it's near a major university. Even then, these major chains usually do special exhibitions and show older films or special back-to-back exhibitions of things like the Harry Potter or the extended editions of LOTR/The Hobbit, etc. Anime is very niche and is not what pays their bills.

They ARE showing The Wind Rises in my town, Columbus... and it's showing AT an art theater like I thought it would most likely would be. It helped me that I've seen other films at that theater and remembered its name..

What really stinks about The Wind Rises is the lack of a good website that lists all the theaters it's being shown in... that's where you have to do your own legwork.

450 theaters is still not bad for the US... Until they changed the way they opened up major films in the US in the late 1980s/early 1990s, they would start at around 450 theaters or less and gradually expand exhibition of movies. That was for mainstream movies like Jaws and Star Wars!

Cool. I'll be buying this at some point. I still hope to be able to see it in a theatre at some point. Maybe the next time a Ghibli retrospective rolls through town...

So Gkids is going to release Patema Inverted as well. Now will they hurry up and get 'A Letter to Momo' out. I mean darn, it's felt like 2 yrs since that announcement.

The Orlando metro has several "Art" theaters, but we rarely get any of the Anime releases. Tampa or Miami are far more likely to screen them.

Maybe we will get lucky this time.

I did get to see The Wind Rises at the AMC 24 Downtown Disney, which made sense as it was a Disney release.

Had a great quick visit to Japan on 23 and 24 November 2013 - saw Kaguya Hime Monogatari at the second session on opening day at the Picadilly in Shinjuku, and bought some Studio Ghibli postcards from the merchandise shop.

It is different - like watching a moving watercolour painting, great to have it taking the full field of view on the big screen.

Any word on whether there will be a dub or will it be subtitled only?

Well in Disney's defense, GKids doesn't have to worry about being called "traitors" for releasing Kaguya Hime over there.

It's called Fandango or Movietickets.com.

It's scheduled for home video in June.

Anyway, this means that it has better chances of being nominated for an Oscar than if it went with Disney. Though if it did get nominated, I imagine Disney would actually be able to go all out better in helping it win.

I'm totally stoked about this license. Will definitely check out a theatre screening as well as buying the home video release.

I hope it goes at least wider than just arthouse theaters, and I missed Poppy Hill because the theater it was supposed to go delayed the screening by a week and I thought they just weren't getting it. Then they did have it, after a while, but I checked back too late.

@GATSU,

JUNE??? Hell, at least put up a pre-order so I can put my order in. Not even a little peep. Thanks for getting me that info. Smile

At least that will go in the next fiscal budget. Guess students will have to watch it when comes out or over the summer if it gets another screening before the release.
