Suncoast by me closed down a while back. Seems to me like they're trying to clean up their image.

Hi, I live in New Orleans, after reading the article concerning the removal of Mature Anime and Manga I called Suncoast. Here is what their employes told me: The Berserk Tv Series is not being pulled however they can no longer sell the manga due to its extreme subject matter. This is most likely the factoring decision made on the removal of the other titles.

I mean i understand WHY they took it down, but what about the manga thats closed (like Battle Royale, all the manga are sealed in shrink wrap) I think that was done in the first place to stop childrens peering eyes, why cant other companies do that.

Mwahaha, for my suncoast stayed open! And now removal of mature manga??? -____- That is just sad. Why not make an even BIGGER warning label??? I blame parents for not watching their 6 year old kid look at books marked clearly "Whatever age-and up", and see some fighting scenes. I blame the parents!
Is it, they will not put it on shelves, and they put it in the back? Or have they stopped getting any in? I think asking for it from the counter/register would work out best intead of getting rid of it all. |

Actually it's because of more than violent fightning scenes. <looks at the first few pages of Berserk> Yeah, a lot more. But as pesmerga said, it doesn't make sense that they took it off the shelfs. When i bought Berserk it was nice and tightly shrink wraped and since the cover isn't offensive, there was no reason to remove it. I still see Those Who Hunt Elves and after flipping through that, i'm suprised they didn't also remove that one. |

I'm a little stumped by Suncoast pulling the anime. Manga I can understand, it's right there for anyone to flip through and get an eye full, Berserk sharing a shelf with Pokemon means any kid can pick a copy and start reading without purchasing. But anime? Other than what's on the insert there isn't usually a whole lot of eyecandy no mater what the conent, especially when the cover the images with the big yellow "Absolutly NOT for children" stickers. And I've also seen that Sam Goody has their anime section divided between Mature titles and everything else with special signs an the shelf that say something along the lines of "Mature Anime: Must have valid ID to purchase. We can order anything, just ask." so why wouldn't Suncoast have the same thing, they're basicly the same store.
And I know damn well that most video stores still place the anime next to the porn, now THAT'S a problem. If they're going to start pulling mature anime/hentai, then they'd better be willing to start pulling the porn too. Emerje |

probably a couple of blue hairs, who think that if it's animated it must be for Children, must have seen their grand kids watching something, then got all of their retirement home buddies to start a letter writing campaign.
i'm not completely serious about the blue hairs, but probably some close minded in general. |

Okay, I have it out with many corporations over the market of anime, mainly how I have to spend thirty bucks for a two episode release of FLCL. And I for one feel that their choice to ban mature anime and manga is unfair for the hardcore or hardporn fans waiting for it to come in. Then, I remember that the majority of sales in the store is practically the majority of Suncoast's business now. I also remember how this has become the pc world and that the word of a disgruntled mother is cause for World War III (not to pun from Southpark). And, judging from the cover of the Rei Rei box, plenty of wars would break out indeed not just with the title in question, but the entire animehood itself, thus more bad references made about otakus. Of course, that's just a random rant.
Personally, I can barely stand to shop at Suncoast anymore, or many stores, because they sell anime for so much money. I just go into a Gamestop down in Towson and buy some for roughly half the price. Anime has just become so popular now that more people are getting into it, and with higher demand comes higher prices. This is also the problem with mature content, as it becomes more popular, the media will look into trying to find any faults of them that may influence children to violent acts. The middle-aged guy who murdered his mother in Japan is a prime example. As these come to pass, mainstream stores like Suncoast are going to be forced to ban certain items in their stores that parents will objectify as immoral, and they won't understand because they don't understand what anime is exactly. So, as for the Berserk manga, having all the content inside it will probably have some objections to parents, and since it's acquired by Dark Horse, I doubt they'll go about shrink wrapping the series like Tokyopop does. As for the Steel Angel mangas, I think the look of it passes it on as more of a kid's book than a mature one. I mean, let's face it, it can be pretty misleading to children. Of course, I'm still ticked that the anime itself is only fifteen minutes each episode; luckily I got that for less too. And I don't really purchase hentai at all (at least offline). It may seem wrong to ban these from the stores, but that's really the choice of the owners themselves; and when a bunch of angry mothers start singing "Blame Japan," they'll probably have to use their best judgement for the situation. But that's just me saying. In their right mind, they should place their adult anime selections at the top rack and make it specifically the adult section, just like Pandora's Cube. |

But that's not the case with berserk each manga volume is sealed in plastic with an 18+ label on it. |

The Suncoast near me never carried hentai. I asked the employee at the register one day why they didn't and he told me that many people found it offensive so they removed it completely. Of course in the "Special Interest/Sports Section" is the Girls Gone Wild collection and every Playboy title you can think of. I also noticed that Suncoast (in the same mall by the way) had a whole seperate section dedicated to hentai.
Yeah like any FYE store. |

The funny thing is Suncoast pulled those manga for off the shelf purchase about THREE MONTHS ago. It's still possible to special order both manga and anime from them them, adult items just need an ID. And this month it's 10% off any special ordered manga there. :¯\_(ツ)_/¯:

Reason #45,903 why I do 99% of my shopping online. More often than not, you don't have to worry about something not being there when you go to buy it, and even if it isn't, you just click to another site. Ah, laziness.

Actually, Amazon made it their policy not to stock up on hentai, even though they have no problem with Faces of Death.

I haven't seen any hentai but, isn't it more suitible for younger eyes than porn? The "Special Intrest" section at the closest Suncoast to me has a fairly large section, couldn't they make one for just anime and manga?
