Another hilariously inappropriate clothing moment: Lunar - Eternal Blue.

This is our party. Please make special note of the girl with the green hair. It's not easy to make out in the game sprite, but she's basically dressed like this:

To make matters worse/more hilarious; they're visiting the place during the coldest registered moment in its history, where even the locals are almost all sick and/or freezing to death due to a monster that needs to be killed.

Frankly, this is one measure of censorship I can live with, and I would not complain if other games imposed it. Fire Emblem: Awakening, for example.

If Nowi was censored for American release, I would have boycotted Nintendo. There is absolutely no reason to censor anything in this day and age.. its not a kids only medium like back in the SNES days.

The fact they even tried to make those Bravely Default characters "sexy" in the first place is what puzzles me.

...it's like trying to eroticize a Precious Moments figurine.

LINE DROP on The X Button?! What has the world gone too?!

No but seriously, I do play that LINE DROP (Because I love Lei-Lei/Hsien-Ko). It's a fun game to kill time (and your battery).

Not sure if one can call GTA 5 misogynistic when it tries to offend everyone. At least it's an equal opportunity offender.

Also Line Drop makes me sad.

Agreed. I don't like the sexualization of the characters in Bravely Default either, but I take my stance on that by voting with my wallet and ignoring the game, not demanding they change it by appealing to some standard that varies from person to person.

And guys, do we really need to report "misogyny" like every gaming journalist and their mother is doing now? I'm not arguing for or against it, but that whole debate has gotten so ugly on both sides that it seems like a losing proposition to bring it up.

If Mighty No.9 is just Megaman HD, I kind of don't see the point, although I guess a lot of people would be happy with that.

Mighty No.9 has been interesting me for a while. I tried to get into Megaman a while back, but I wasn't good at games and it just frustrating. Now that I consider Super Meat Boy to be a fun game and I beat F-Zero GX on Master Mode...I think I can tale on MM's spiritual successor on. I hope there's a PC release.

Also Call's final design is qt3.14 as [expletive].

Right, right, terrorism, of course. Why on Earth would someone come to fear the debate?

Because it might just lead to positive change that marginalizes the misogynists of the world.

People fear the debate because it may suggest their views are WRONG.

My point is that people go "man, these gaming sexism debates always get so nasty" and then don't have them. And that lets the misogynists win. It's what they want--to shut down any debate so they can live in their echo chambers. Intentionally using fear (you know, terrorising) to browbeat people into not doing something is terrorism, last time I checked.

It's same rationale behind slinging death/rape threats against feminists in gaming--use fear and terrorize them into leaving.

There seems to be a strong impulse towards the dank comforts of dark, smelly echo-chambers on both stereotyped sides of the debate. Such people are useless bores so I'm not surprised people don't want to hear from them.

While I think "terrorism" is a little too strong (you're comparing people being murdered to instill fear and political change with people feeling uncomfortable to speak their mind in a rude environment), I agree that it's important to keep having the discussion so that people become aware of what they're doing, and why it's wrong. Getting rid of the manchild sexists would do much to help the gaming community. However, I think an even better goal than "shaming the sexists out of our group who are trying to shame the women out of our group", would be to educate, so that those reachable (and I'd like to think most are) can change their behavior and be more inclusive so that we can all get along and play the games we all love together without fear or animosity. Farfetched, I know, but another good reason to keep the discussions going. Though it is true that both sides of the debate get ruthlessly nasty with the other, and make everything feel so negative in what should be a pleasant pastime.

As far as Bravely Default: Censorship is never acceptable. Doesn't matter if it consists of something as simple as erasing blood or a cleavage. I wasn't looking to pick up Bravely Default in the first place, and yes the skimpy outfits on super-deformed chibis is silly, but it really is the principle of the matter. People should be free to oppose censorship in all its forms without it being suggested that that's just an excuse to sate their prurient interest.

By the by. One of the Fire Emblem Awakening DLC was indeed censored to cover up the one Mage lady.

To end on a positive note: I was ecstatic that Project X Zone got localized, and hope to see similar games released here, too. I'd also love to see Liberation Maiden Sin, but I'm not getting my hopes up.

Japan

US

Oh GOD NO. WE MUST NOT SHOW BUTTS.

On a more serious note, this is a perfect example of of what someone mentioned earlier about varying standards. That comic you linked to awkward zombie also mildly irritated me because his comic and author's comment was essentially "Let's make a comic about how my standards are better than the concept artists of Fire Emblem and make over exaggerated quips to make it seem like I'm only joking and not actually shoving my views down your throat."

I couldn't care less about the designs, but apparently being ok (or rather, not raising a voice about it) with Nowi's design apparently makes me a pedophile.
But by GOD, they BETTER not show Tharja's covered butt. That's despicable.

Oh the actual censorship issue. Most of the time North American self-censorship (and let's call it what is. any censorship is coming by choice from the localizers, not being mandated by an outside party. Like a government. Censorship is only really REALLY bad when your government is forcing it) is more to do with marketing then any kind of prudish behavior by the publisher. The US game rating system is simply stricter in the US then in Japan. If these things were left alone the game would get a more mature rating and that would impact exposure. And by proxy, sales.

Are American rating criteria draconian? Maybe (I might argue that Japan's are too lax when it comes to sexuality. Where ours are too lax when it comes to graphic violence). But until the standards change I think a few minor cosmetic changes are fine if it means the game has the potential to be more successful.
