Well I understand where you're coming from (I think it should've been under 'interest' label instead of news) AKB48 is Japan's top girl group (like how Girls Generation/SNSD is South Korea's top girl group). So yeah any news about AKB48 is big news in Japan. I guess ANN wanted to report on any big news in Japan to us anime fans.

There are some inconsistencies with the article.

1. Yuko Oshima announced her Graduation from AKB48. Her exact graduation date is yet to be determined.
2. She achieved first place in the second general senbatsu elections in 2010 and for the fourth in 2012
3. The others of AKB48 were not aware of this decision as it was very suddenly announced.

I wrote all three of those things in this article, so I don't see how there are any inconsistencies. ANN's article and Tokyohive's article say the exact same things. If you're reading it differently, please let me know how so maybe I can fix some wording.

Edit: Maybe you mean the headline, can be read as though she has already graduated? If that's the case I fixed the headline and changed the wording so it doesn't read as though she's already graduated.

We've reported before a few times on members of AKB48 graduating, especially for those members who have voiced roles in anime or in manga-based live-action dramas/films. Since the graduation might mean they will take on more voice acting/acting roles, or maybe they'll take on no more voice acting/acting roles, we believe it's worth reporting on.

I'd say its notable enough since the "leader" of AKB0048 (the anime) was based on Yuko Oshima.

Yeah, I meant the headline specifically. After I read the article, the info was there so I apologize for that.

He she said what she's graduating to? A solo career? AV? Returning to the work force?

This is big news because Yuko Oshima is like the 2nd most popular AKB member ever after Atsuko Maeda. Every year in the General Election she always placed 1st or 2nd. Her rivalry with Acchan was very known as they were the top 2 members competing for No.1 spot.

As much as I'd love AV, she has far too many golden opportunities due to her popularity to have to resort to that. Probably a solo career.

My guess: Oshima-san has already signed with a new talent agency for her solo career but the new deal will not be announced until she "retires" from AKB48.

She'll definitely pursue a solo singing career, and if she has a good speaking voice a possible career as a seiyuu.

since she announced it during the kohaku new year's live TV show, which is basically the biggest TV show in Japan seen by virtually 80% of the people, it's pretty much official news.

I seem to remember she said she intends to pursue a solo career [I wasn't paying much attention, sorry.] we will hear more about this soon enough I guess.

Best to check and verify with the following:
* Stage 48 (http://stage48.net/forum/index.php)
* akb48matome.com
* official 48G websites

As of now, there is still no definite date for Oshima's graduation concert.
