That's really not a lot. Pretty sure all the latest MMO's started with that amount or higher. Rift, SWTOR, GW2, Tera, Aion, etc.

How many of those are free to play as opposed to ARR's subscription service?

Doesn't really seem like that much.

And I don't see it keeping it since it's a rather generic mmo. Great looks won't soley keep it aflot

At work, we're getting free (multiple) copies. That probably helped. Laughing

Not a lot really.
These games tend to drop off as well after a few months, so if this drops below 1 million, then they could be in trouble...again!

TOR wasn't F2P when it had those huge numbers. I think TOR had over 2 million for numbers soon after release, similar to FFXIV now. Subscription MMOs tend to only switch to F2P when the high numbers start dropping. Not dissing FFXIV, just correcting a little on the F2P remark.

SE announced a while ago that FFXI has been their most financially-successful installment in the franchise, and last I played (a couple years ago at this point) it still had a few hundred thousand subscribers, a decade after release (certainly a bit less now compared to when I stopped playing, since FFXIV:ARR is finally taking off). I was never big into exploring other MMOs, but I'm pretty sure that it had more staying power amongst both dedicated XI and series' fans, than most other MMOs released in the last 10 years had with their player base (with the exception of the few really obvious heavy hitters that have managed to last).

XIV's original release was clearly a bomb for obvious reasons, but ARR seems to be doing a good job at enticing gamers into giving it a second chance. In my college game design program, I'm surprised at the number of people who are playing it, and all my old XI friends say it's massively improved, and it's now catering to franchise nostalgia through a ton of returning themes and elements. If ARR has 1.5 million subscribers atm, and the new version of the game is as good (according to its target fanbase) as I hear, I don't doubt that it'll survive for a long, long time. Certainly it's not going to stay at 1.5 mil (or higher), but I'm sure it'll survive just as XI has with a few hundred k until a new FF MMO replaces it, and certainly it's going to (finally) provide SE with a return profit, just as XI always has.

Also helped that anyone that played 1.0 got 2.0 for free. Probably why this is a subscribers number and not a sales number.

Well that's one thing FFXIV will never do. FFXI is still $11.95/30 days after 11 years and still gets new content and expansions. As long as FFXIV keeps getting updates it'll keep making money.

It wasn't a remark; I was actually asking how many of them were free to play. I should have followed that question with how much does F2P vs. P2P affect account numbers. I'm not terribly knowledgeable when it comes to MMOs as ARR is the first one I've ever played.
