Due to the way the game is designed, with heavy usage of instances, SE was forced to limit how many players were on a server at a given time.
The primary issue is the sheer number of players trying to access the instance server. This causes the server to backlog, then start building up errors until it's no longer responding. Shutting down the instance server would mean preventing all players from advancing in class and main story-line quests, most of which use the instance server; as does many cut-scenes. To put it simply, there are way too many players trying to do the same things at the same time. This was something that came up in the final phase of the beta but was drowned out in related issues. Square Enix has issued a statement that they are implementing a plan to expand server capacity and the number of Worlds available, and that it should be finished by early next week. Here's another link. Last edited by Dardre on Wed Aug 28, 2013 11:34 pm; edited 2 times in total |

Yeah, I haven't even been able to log in with my character.

Strangely, I didn't notice any login problems on my server during the final beta. But, once pre-order kicked in, things... changed. I couldn't even log on to my server and ended up making a new character on a Japanese server. I wonder when they'll get all this squared away. Some of it will fix itself as people spread out, but S-E will take a hit due to this in the meantime.
It's a shame, really, because this MMO is so much better than the previous version (which I beta-tested for about 4 hours). Hopefully this choppy period ends soon. |

There were some login issues during phase 4, mainly from Worlds rapidly filling up and getting character creation locked down.
No, the big issue for that phase was the 'Bound by Duty' bug aka 'Error 90000'. That error masked the issue with an overloaded instance server, or it was misinterpreted. For now, we're stuck with SE manually limiting logins and character creation until the increased capacity and new Worlds are ready. It's so frustrating to not be able to play, especially when your friends are sending you emails asking when you'll be getting on. A lot of players aren't even logging off anymore. There's no auto-kick for extended periods of AFK, so players can just leave the character logged in and go to work or school. If SE can fix this quickly enough, they might get off with a black eye and a little unexpected benefit of people hearing how popular it appears to be. |

So it's a standard MMO launch.

It's a typical MMO launch.
But this is not a typical MMO. It would have been nice for SE to actually get this as right as possible. |

Wow, it looks like 257 people tried to log in at once.

It's always funny to see who lost their MMO virginity when you see people complaining about server issues on Day 1 as if it's something new or unexpected. |

Problem is the game has been launch-ready for a day short of two weeks now and they still haven't been able to make it stable. They even had four whole days where nobody was playing and still didn't show even a little progress in that time. I have no idea how they can say they weren't expecting so many people at launch. Between pre-order numbers, open "beta" numbers, Legacy numbers, and non-Legacy 1.0 numbers they must have had some sort of idea this was going to be a big deal. They keep asking people to make new characters on different servers, but surely they know, since much of the production team worked on FFXI, that FF MMO playes are against that. Since players can do everything with one character (aside from city-based main storys) the focus is on growing a single character to do everything. People don't abandon that so easily. What they should have done is have the world transfer service ready at launch, not wait until sometime next month to bring it in. And expecting people to pay for it like with FFXI is just adding insult to injury. Emerje |

I must disagree, I have been having a blast so far and enjoy the Japanese side of the community very much. Shout is generally quiet and not filled with internet meme jokes or talking about WoW or general trolling or spamming how the game sucks or is going to go free to play or WoW is better... Every dungeon group was competent too. Black Mages were using Sleep to CC mobs and no one was spamming AoEs to break them, they actually marked targets and took them down one by one which made it much easier and fun to heal them. I've yet to see a single insult like 'noob' or 'lrn 2 play' as well and I was really impressed... When there were issues with certain quests like killing a certain monster or clicking a certain item you saw players forming lines to take turns rather than zerging around trying to screw people over to progress it themselves. Also the names have been more lore friendly or cute rather than stupid like Fourtwenty Blazeit or Chucknorris Roftbot where people think they're being witty. My time here has been much much better than when I was on the NA servers during Early Access. The difference in community is like night and day and it's amazing and wish I had joined it sooner. If there are trolls as you say I have not seen any on any of the Japanese servers I joined. |

So it isn't only an European problem (a friend of mine had difficulty logging in a few days ago)...

I don't know why you would want to play a social game with people who you can't talk to, but hey whatever.
Personally, Japanese servers sound boring. |
