Cast and staff looks great but I can only wonder why they built such a comparatively large school if only one of the classrooms was going to be barely used?

The population in the past was probably considerably larger. It wouldn't be the first rural area to suffer population shrinkage.

"Closed schools in Japan being converted for more creative uses"

  • With the continued greying of Japan’s population, as well as the declining birth rate, one of the “victims” of this phenomenon are the schools. Since fewer and fewer babies are being born, it stands that there is no need for some schools. Around 400-500 schools close down annually....

That graph doesn't seem too surprising. A lot of Japanese families are sending their kids to more illustrious private schools even for elementary in hopes that the education will get them into famous midde and high schools leading to higher education and a well-paying job based solely off that education background.

And so long as they're in a city or suburban enough to be connected to a good rail network, shipping kids far away to attend better schools isn't an issue. Rural locations would have more issues, with more infrequent rail and bus services service, and their populations continuing to decline.

And it's not like that school is superhuge, it looks like a classic wooden structure built during Japan's recovery.
