Eek one more reason for me to get a 3DS. Well hope Sonic 3 & Knuckles my favorite of the classics gets a port too.

It's just a shame Sega isn't interested in bringing these over.

If this ends up being as bad as Sonic Genesis for the GBA, then this is not a bad thing. And finding a Genesis and a copy of Sonic 1 is easy to do for relatively cheap; shouldn't cost you more than $30 if you don't go to some retro-gaming store (all of which overprice everything, I've noticed).
Also, call me a purist, but adding the spin dash to Sonic 1 is just... wrong.

I fail to recall a pressing need for a spin-dash manoeuvre. The patient player needs only to give the eponymous erinaceid an adequate run-up to inclined sections.

Agreed. And I must add, if anybody doesn't want to find a Genesis and a copy of Sonic 1, just grab a XBox 360 or PS3 game that has all the old sega games up there.

If you're buying a platform for a port of a game from 1991 that's already playable on a tonne of different devices I don't know what to say ...

Sega's been adding the spin dash to Sonic 1 ever since the first port for Sega Saturn. That seems to be the way they prefer it. (In fact, since the Sega Saturn port was my first experience with the game, I didn't know the original didn't have the spin dash until fairly recently.) Still, they usually give you an option to play with or without. It was really hard for me, playing the PS3 port that was just like the original; I'm so used to having spin dash!

I plan to get a Japanese 3DS XL, but I live in America. Will I still be able to download this?

Add "with more money than sense" and you'll be spot on.

Yes, but you might need Japanese eShop point cards to put money on it.

Huh, so they're moving the Sega Channel to the 3DS.
