Thats bad news for people hoping for a 2nd TV season. I can't think of any examples where there was a movie that continued the story and then they did a 2nd season to continue from the movies story..

For HLP, technically no, since the third series has not been scheduled yet, much less released. Once that actually happens, the answer would be yes, but plans do sometimes change.

For Strike Witches, no, because the movie came after the second series.

To meet the requirements specified, you would need a series, then a movie which continued the plotline of the series, then another series that continued the plot.

There seems to be a trend of taking successful properties and going the movie route.

I can see the advantage in the Japanese market, since while there is little risk in pirating a TV series, pirating a movie still in theaters involves risk, and typically results in a markedly inferior product (i.e., a camrip). As such, these productions are relatively safe from piracy until the BD/DVD release.

On the downside, there is very little chance of those who consume media via only legal means of seeing it in a timely fashion, short of an import from Japan. Thankfully, there has been improvement in U.S. companies that license a movie for home video also making it available for their paid streaming plans, so perhaps there is hope we will one day be getting subtitled streaming releases even sooner.

I'd say it depends on the company, and the movie in question.
Sentai licensed Towanoquon and streamed it subbed, with a schedule of 1 movie every two weeks, the 6th and final movie being streamed only 2 months after JP theater premiere. Which is pretty timely for a movie, all things considering.

Since Sentai licensed the GuP TV series, one would hope they'd license the movie as well and if that becomes the case, depending on when they actually license it, there might be a chance it becomes availible legally relatively soon after the JP premiere.

Hayate no Gotoku?

Also, for Strike Witches, considering the movie said to be continued at the end of the credits, it's likely that the staff wants to make another season (whether it can be done is another question).

Well, I'm a little glad that it's none of this condensed retelling stuff that's been happening lately...

Is it possible that the reason we're getting a movie as opposed to another series is that there is not yet enough source material to adapt? I haven't read any of the manga, so I have no idea personally if that is true or not. But considering what a massive seller the first series was, it's a little hard to imagine there wouldn't be a second season at some point provided there was enough source material.

Anime first work; there's as much story space available as they want to do. I can see why they'd want to stick with a single movie for the follow-up as the series was at its best on the two part battles.

In order for a real second season to form as something separate from a movie/first season, Ourai or whichever school was its story center would need larger stakes than dissolution. Senshoudo is an interesting sport but a second season just based off that would fall in the Bamboo Blade camp; the first half about the people forming a kendo club and their problems, the second half was kendo.

Now, the series could always go sideways though, exploring the world it's in and variations on the basic battle such as battle royals {...}, duels, tag teams and the like. Or explain where the males are in all of this as if any sport could truly be called gender neutral, it would be this one. {Auto racing is not a sport}.

Girls und Panzer is indeed an anime-original work; the manga is an adaptation.

Sensha-do is a maidenly art, like flower-arranging. Men driving tanks is thought of as strange. WWII went much the same way in Girls und Panzer's universe, so the implication is that driving tanks as a sport is a womanly activity, while men only drive them during war.

There never was any source material, it's an original series and the manga is a tie-in that runs consecutively. Tons of anime do this, or even have their manga counterparts start a few months earlier to drum up a fanbase and support for the TV series, but it doesn't make the show an adaptation. The source would be whatever the screenwriters create, they're not limited by anything.

I hope we get anime's first four hour epic, that's something we've never had. Very few ever go beyond two hours, even in a world where Hollywood films stretch to 150 minutes with ease. 1985's Odin is that long though, and both Haruhi's film and Final Yamato stretch about another 13 minutes beyond that. Though I'm not counting on it being any more than 120 minutes.

Ah, I didn't realize the anime preceded the manga. Then I do have to pronounce myself baffled as to why a movie is being made as opposed to a second season. I would have thought the sales figures alone would have lead to a second season being planned.

I think you mean "simultaneously".

More to the point, I'd love to see somebody do an "In a world"-style trailer for the movie, especially if they can do a good Don La Fontaine impersonation(may he rest in peace).

Theatrical productions are en vogue. Over the last five years, I've seen announcements for series-based movies skyrocket, like Tiger & Bunny, Hayate, Hanasaku Iroha, Nanoha, Madoka, Strike Witches, Steins;Gate, Sora no Otoshimono, GuP, Blood-C, and just heaps more that are franchise-related. Then there's movie serials like Kara no Kyoukai, Towa no Quon, Mardock Scramble, Berserk... And we haven't even gotten to stand-alone films, whether adaptations or original. Films naturally protect themselves against piracy unless someone wants to risk filming in a theater, and fans want to bother watching awful camrips. Films also provide double dipping without even being fully conscious of it. You pay 15-1800 yen to see your film initially, and then 6000 yen to own it. I wonder why it took so long for a boom like this to occur.
