No, Yamato is such an epic property in anime that it doesn't need them, but if it'll make a small contribution to unveiling an all-time classic to a new audience, then I'm all for it. I especially like the fact that they have Ichiro Mizuki, a vocalist from another Matsumoto heavyweight, Captain Harlock, involved in the Yamato 2199 project.

It's simple. First movie came out first half of last year, made up of two episodes. Subsequent movies out every three months roughly with four episodes each (26 total episodes by the last quarter of this year). Home video release (DVD and English-subbed Blu-Ray) around 4-6 weeks after the cinema release. The next movie (Chapter/Volume 5, Episodes 15-18) is out early April with the corresponding Blu-Ray/DVD release May 28th.

TV deal was only announced in January. Premiering April 7 at 5pm on TBS. Not sure how many episodes are playing in the first batch, but it's either 10 (the first three Chapters/Movies) or 13 (a full cour of episodes). I've not seen anything categorical about how many episodes TBS have licensed.

It's an interesting experiment in releasing a series. Because a section of their target audience are adults in their 30s or older (more money to spend), they can conceivably get a double sweep of the home video market. Get the dedicated Yamato fans first, who go to the movies and buy the merchandise at the cinema (they can actually buy special editions of the Blu-ray/DVD there as well as numerous other Yamato goods). Put English subs on the Blu-Rays so that the Yamato/Star Blazers fans from outside Japan who are in the same age group and potentially have money to spend on it can import from Japan. Next, get it on prime-time anime TV to attract a new market. Second spurt of home video sales results, especially when they run out of episodes to air and there are more available on Blu-Ray and DVD (Chapter 4 is already out and Chapter 5 will be out by the time Yamato finishes its first TV run).

I like how the Japanese singers keep on performing - Ichirou Mizuki, Mitsuko Horie and Hironobu Kageyama appeared together in a series of concerts called "Anison Big 3" and sounded really good together at the concert I attended.
