edit: A friend corrected me. The highest end video cards are actually 1000 dollars (GTX 690 for example), so I guess I was being modest. |

Its not like they actually cost nearly that much to make, plus you have to understand that when you buy something in mass it is much cheaper than buying just one of them like a normal consumer. Obviously they will still be taking a loss like stated but I doubt they around going to 1000's of dollars in loss for each unit lol. |

A few people meeting backstage at an electronics show hardly qualifies as a reliable source of information.
But in all seriousness, running a console at launch for $400 is only going to make people want a price drop faster. At least when the PS3 was at $600 people were somewhat satisfied at the first few price drops. If a $400 console drops too much, it won't be worth it to sell them at $300 or less. |

A staggering $8 billion - the total losses made by Microsoft's Xbox 360 ($2.996 billion) and Sony's PS3 ($4.951 billion):
http://www.mcvuk.com/news/read/8bn-the-total-losses-made-by-xbox-360-and-ps3/0108917 In this economy, doubtful they could afford those types of losses again. (About the $400 price point, back then I got the $400 360 with a $100 rebate too.) Here's some more speculations about the 720 and PS4: http://www.computerandvideogames.com/382897/xbox-720-the-14-game-changing-features-of-the-next-xbox/ http://www.computerandvideogames.com/383330/ps4-psm3-investigates-15-features-of-the-next-playstation-4/ As for facts, here's the the Top 100 best-selling games of 2012 in the UK (all platforms). Might be a boring article for ANN, since Nintendo doesn't even appear until #28, the first J-centric game not till #44 (that'd be FFXIII-2), and Pokemon Black v2 at #71 and Pokemon White v2 at #87 (hmmmm....... what if they're combined........). |

The 360 doesn't use a video card. It has a proprietary graphics chip which works with the hardware setup of the console. It's more likely the next console will simply boost its memory capacity, and much of everything else stays the same (although with updated hardware). Despite what people think, hardware in a computer is cheap. The reason you see $400+ dollars for a video card is because you're the customer, not the distributor. It's no different than a phone costing less than $150 to make but is sold for $600+. Microsoft isn't focusing the next console on gamers. It's going to focus it on everyone. There will be two models: core (though I heard $299, not $399) and basic ($199 and comes with Kinect 2), where basic doesn't play games, but simply is a "Roku"-like box for streaming over Live. Well, that's the rumor today. It could change tomorrow. |

I have a LEGIT and very credible source regarding the Next Xbox.
The site Semi Accurate has listed 2 possible chipsets for it and both suggest that the console will go into in production in March. Major announcements will take place at GDC and the console will have a large digital lineup which includes SEGA Networks as its biggest Japanese publisher. The first is most common chipset that is believed to have been chosen is called "Durango". Which uses an Intel Power i7 Lynnfield "Haswell". It runs 4-8 GBs of RAM and 64 MBs of CPU Memory. The GPU will be the new AMD Radeon R11 series CPU "8000 series" codenamed "Sea Island". The console will be both a physical media "Blu-Ray Dual Layer" and Digital and Cloud Computing system. It is a high end 384-bit console. The other speculated chipset is codenamed "Oban". The GPU is the same but the CPU is believed to be the IBM Power 7 Watson. The chosen chipset remains a mystery whether or not its Durango or Oban, all sources and reports say the same thing: Xbox Next is READY to go. The final name for the console is believed to be "Xbox Outlook" or "Xbox O". It will be sold at a huge loss because Mircosoft still has the capital to so. As for PS3's successor, Orbis is a red herring. A fanmade codename. The PS4 is codenamed "THEBES" not "Orbis". Thebes which will be called "Playstation NEAR" consists of a modified and customized AMD Bulldozer replaced with a R10 Southern Islands GPU codenamed "Jagaur". The console will NOT launch this year. It it set for production next year. Because it uses AMD as a CPU/GPU base, it will cost more than Xbox Outlook $500 not $400. Sony's financial status is gradually worsening. Near/Thebes is going to be the company's final console and is facing serious threats from Mircosoft and SEGA Orbi who's already in the process of completing all filing of its paperwork for the big re-organization of SEGA set for February in which SEGA is planning both a Tablet and new high end Ray Tracing Arcade machine in which there ARE plans to design a low end 512-bit console from. Next months AOU is expected to be SEGA's busiest AOU shows in 19 years(Since Model 2,Sat VT and CRX)with 3 new hardware boards to be unveiled. |

According to my very reliable source, they ALL point to it using the new AMD Radeon 8000 GPU. |

hardware losses are nowhere near as important as having successful game titles which bring in licensing revenues.

You're joking, right? The 360 and PS3 are horribly outdated. In 2 more years this generation will be as long as the PS's and the PS2's generations combined. |

Is that why it took an 8th Generation Nintendo console to be better than both of them? Not only that, but it is only 50% more powerful than the PS3/Xbox-360. Same with the SNES vs Genesis/Mega Drive, in which the SNES could do what the Genesis needed to do on via those 2 shitty attachments, on it's own. The Wii U for an 8th Gen console is piss weak. |

The problem here is that PS4 is switching to yet another platform, or should I say to a commodity platform. It is sad to see they abandoned the Cell/PPC technology to satisfy lazy game programmers who couldn't be bothered to learn how to optimize it. The fact of the matter is that parallelism continues to be the future of 3D processing, but it isn't enough that you get parallelism on the GPU. No matter what Intel/AMD say, the x86 architecture is inadequate for true parallelism, whereas the Cell/PPC architecture continues to outperform. If they had chosen to utilize the latest top-end GPU from Nvidia + the latest Power7+ (appropriately modified for embedding) from IBM, that would have given us a truly next generation console with even the ability to harness the prototype engine that Square has. The current specs I am seeing for the next gen consoles seem dismal, at best. |

Don't new GPU chips always have terrible yields when they start out? How can AMD actually produce enough of these to meet any kind of launch demand? |

Sony is abandoning the Cell architecture because they cannot afford it. They've been in the red the last 4 years; Fitch Ratings downgraded Sony debt to junk status with negative outlook. They don't have the money to develop it, and they can't afford to take the losses that they took with the PS3 (to the tune of $5 billion). It is still true though that it usually takes developers a couple years to figure out all the tips and tricks of a new system, but that's the same as when learning any new language (ex: ya think new foreign language students would be good in Japanese right away?). Sony can't afford to wait for that neither and give Microsoft the same headstart like with the 360. In the future, consoles and computers may likely converge, as everything seems to be converging these days (consoles becoming all-entertainment centers, computers and tablets, etc). People want less devices and more all-in-one entertainment devices that could do anything. That's why this next gen may be the last "console." |
