Anyone see the irony here? Australia's first R18+ title is a "Nintendo" Game. Home of Mario, Zelda, and Kurby.

I think it's safe to say that nobody could have possibly predicted this. These are definitely words I never thought I'd ever see.

AU video game industry is a joke.
sometimes I feel bad for the consumer with all the red tape, but usually I just laugh.

About 20 years overdue, but better late than never. And would you believe that Australia's OFLC banned Marc Ecko's Getting Up for glorifying graffiti? Talk about misplaced priorities. So what if vandalism and graffiti rates go up? That's easily resolved by providing facilities for graffiti artists.

I've been buying Nintendo games for a better part of 19 years and considering Nintendo is the same company that also has the rights to Mario, Donkey Kong, Legend Of Zelda, Kirby and yet they are releasing their a 18+ game.

Didn't think I'd ever read 18+ with Nintendo in my lifetime. Well over due in my opinion that they expand their line though.

I highly doubt that we will ever see a 18+ game in North America from Nintendo given how Nintendo is seen here.

Of course Nintendo would never release an AO game over here - only two games have managed to get it on violence alone(and I don't think Ninja Gaiden's ever going to be anything like Thrill Kill or Manhunt 2); it's just the Australia raters being overstrict.

I think the day Nintendo releases a AO video game here is the day the re-release Earthbound or license Mother 3/Earthbound 2. Definitely not going to happen any time soon to say the least.

Why does Australia have those barbaric censorship laws? They need to adopt our civilized, superior freedom of speech instead.

They better be lucky we bailed their asses out during the war or they'd be speaking Japanese by now.

Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge released in NA. That's an 18+ game according to AU. So yeah, Nintendo they are the same game. It makes no different what you put on your rate it.

It has nothing to do with Nintendo and the games. If Americans would change the video game Law like to similar to AU, Nintendo would release 18+ games here too.

When you guys talk about Nintendo not releasing any 18+ games in North America, are you talking about Nintendo as a developer, publisher, or just the console company that has the right to allow (and not allow) games to come out for their hardware?

I ask because they have published and/or allowed 18+ games for the SNES, N64 and Gamecube. I don't know about the Wii or Wii U, but that's because I haven't owned a new console in over a decade.

You're probably thinking of 'M' (17+) games. Nintendo has never released or published anything 'AO '(18+).

The greater irony is that more than likely it would have been released a month ago at MA 15+.

I don't know why they started out several centuries behind the rest of the modern world, but it's apparent that not having fetishes in adult material or R18+ games has neutered their economy.

And let's not forget that before this decision, in an attempt to not seem like fascists (though it was always doomed to failure), the OFLC would rate games MA15+ when the identical games were M17+ in the US, or 18+ in Europe.

Some instances are just quaint (why were Persona 3 and 4 rated M17+, for example), because they illustrate just how far removed two 'Western' cultures can be.

Why else would a conservative treasurer encourage the populace to have more children "for the sake of the economy"? It's the ultimate Ponzi scheme.

www.somebodythinkofthechildren.com has documented some of the more egregious cases.

At least then they'd have something to damper their strastospheric rape rate.

Err, I hope you're being sarcastic. I'd choose Australia over USA any day of the week. Let me get this straight, you'd choose violent videogames over sensible laws, lawmakers and adjudicators who, say, ban off label marketing of drugs?

http://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMp1214926

Or, everybody's favourite supreme court decision, Citizens United vs FEC!

The OFLC is retarded (there's a whole wikipedia article on it), and it's just one part of Australia's multi-headed censor-beast (we're planning to implement an internet filter, good idea, since the Great Firewall works sooooo well) which is probably the worst in the world on this side of a dictatorship, but the USA is the last country I would use as a model after right now.

Allowing R18+ video games is a small step in the right direction.

P.S. USA never bailed us out from WW2. I assume that's the war you're talking about, our involvement in WW1 was basically sending young men into a suicide mission at the behest of Great Britain. We had repelled them already when USA dropped the nukes.
