"despite launching its console a year earlier." glad this part was mentioned. most websites I've read this news on exclude this part so all the fanboys just keep saying "took them 7 years LAWLALAWLALW". I had 3 XBOX's red-ring and my friend went through 5. I wonder how many of those XBOX sales accounts for Red-rings (before they added the warranty them in 09). My ps3 has lasted me all 4 years I've owned it with no issues, so I'm happy for Sony.

It's one thing to ship that many consoles, but it's another to know how many you actually sold, so it's hard to get worked up over such numbers without the proper--and more important--context.

I've alwayed wonder if the 'new/refurbished' consoles they send back to you when they decide to keep your dead one counts as a 'shipped' unit. Mine only RROD once and they sent a newer unit back instead of mine, but seeing people who've gone through 4 or 5 I wonder if that adds to the number in circulation or something |

No, I'm inclined to think that distinction is fairly meaningless in this kind of long run analysis. They aren't going to continue to ship new units until the in stock ones sell. So all this really does is potentially skew it by whatever quantity is currently in stock at stores which is going to be negligible next to the total actually sold over these consoles long, long lives. |

sorry but out ships is pointless if it dosent sell which compare to the 360 dosent sell very well granted i have all 3 but sadly ps3 died out quick not alot of exclusives out there other than uncharted imfamous and god of war and online is a joke granted their bluray is awesome thats basicly why i bought mine but other than that just a paperweight now the 360 granted it had a bug or 2 but delivered in everyway I've had my 360 for 5 yrs no issue no rrod or anything i just hope sony does a much better job with the ps4

These figures are consoles shipped. At last check, consoles sold are as follows:
http://n4g.com/news/1150401/global-weekly-chart-ending-29th-dec-2012 Wii - 98.8 million 360 - 74.2 million PS3 - 72.4 million The 360 passed 70M in Sep 2012, while the PS3 passed 70M a couple months later. So it won't be till later this year or next year when PS3s sold surpasses the 360, particularly when people are holding off for then buying the 720 instead. But, as others have pointed out, the money is not on the consoles but on the software licenses. Heck, a staggering $8 billion - the total losses made by Microsoft ($2.996 billion) and Sony ($4.951 billion): http://www.mcvuk.com/news/read/8bn-the-total-losses-made-by-xbox-360-and-ps3/0108917 At this point late in the gen's console life-cycle, console sales matter less because latecomers generally buy fewer games than early adopters over the course of the console's lifetime. So for console makers, they'd prefer an early surge rather than a late surge. Yet, despite the most console sales, the Wii's game attachment-to-consoles ratio is actually 3rd behind the PS3 (2nd) and the 360 (1st). Wii owners tend not to buy as many games as PS3 and 360 owners. The 360 sold the most games in 2011 and 2012, though it doesn't help the PS3 game ratio that some people buy it mainly for the Blu-ray/online but with the option to play games only occasionally. As for the future, expect Microsoft to announce the Xbox 720 (and maybe Sony's PS4 too) at E3 later this year. But while 720 will most likely be somewhat backwards compatible (like the 360 was), the PS4 may not be. Sony has been in the red the last 4 years, so unlike with the PS3, they don't have much money to develop their own stuff for the PS4, like the Cell architecture. So to save money, they're ditching their old architecture, and instead they'd be using regular PC components such as an AMD CPU and Radeon graphics. Like the Xbox, they'd be switching closer to the PC architecture. The 720 is rumored to use the AMD Radeon HD 6670 graphics while the PS4 the AMD Radeon HD 7670 (both entry-level GPUs by today's PC standards - the 7670 is just a re-branding of the 6670 featuring the same specs across the board - though there's also rumor that both would use the newer 8000 series instead). The 720 OS will be closer to Win8, as Microsoft wants the same UI experience across its many platforms. |

It would skew the data somewhat, but not as much as some would like to imply. Shipped figures are almost invariably "shipped to retailer" meaning warranty issues do not count under the figure. Refurbished or new consoles under warranty do not count, unless of course you red-ringed and went out and bought a new one at the shop. Either way the figures are only estimates and should be taken with a grain of salt anyway. |

The fact they list VGChartz as their source nullifies their opinion. VGChartz makes stuff up as it sees fit and is not reliable. |

IDC has its own issues and, more likely than not, the PS3 hasn't passed the 360 (yet). |
