You know, I noticed how a lot of older anime used sound effects in their openings. Shows like Magic Knight Rayearth and Transformers: Super-God Masterforce had them.
I don't think I've watched any anime past the year 2001 that has used sound effects in their opening. |

These days, OPs are a lot more about selling a music single than anything. Sound effects would kinda hurt the song since you don't want to hear them on the CD. |

I wonder if the sound effects during opening thing started with the iconic opening to the original Yamato?

I find it absolutely hilarious that the question about anime opening sound effects came up in this week's Answerman. I was just watching the latest episode of Saint Seiya Omega this week, and as I'm watching the new opening theme, I started noticing something odd. I couldn't put my finger on it right away and then it hit me - suddenly, after 5-6 episodes of the new opening having been introduced, there are *sound effects added*. And I got completely giddy over it, because in the original Saint Seiya themes (circa 1989) there were *always* sound effects in the themes. Omega has been a pure nostalgia kick for me since it was released, and the addition of sound effects to the new opening theme has basically just been the icing on the cake for me.
That said, although I ultimately do prefer the openings without sound effects these days, as they're easier to sing along to, I don't *mind* them so long as they don't dominate the opening theme. If I have to actually go download a copy of the song itself just to find out if it's a good song because the sound effects drown it out in the theme, then I think someone possibly screwed up on the OP storyboard planning stage. That, or they *really* didn't like the opening theme and were *trying* to keep us from hearing it. |

... I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that list is probably not so universal, once you expand your circle of viewers Last edited by configspace on Fri Nov 30, 2012 3:42 pm; edited 1 time in total |

I am perennially perplexed by the notion that DVD regions pose a barrier to access. Methods for overcoming region-locking protection abound. In absence of substantial import taxes and associated fees, the fruits of all regions are there for one's picking. This said, I grant that this maxim might cease to hold once Blu-ray gains sufficient popularity. |

The last one I remember is Gash Bell which ran until 2006. Sound effects do add a bit of atmosphere to them. |

Now, now...The first tape had four, the rest had a whopping three. MSRP was $29.99 It did not, however, come with a meowing cat. If you wanna talk about "uphill both ways" - remember Blue Sub no. 6? You only got ONE episode per tape. $29.99 a piece. Or Fushigi Yuugi - 14 VHS tapes 29.99 subbed or 24.99 dub. Or you could've bought 32 VHS tapes of Maison Ikkoku for $24.99 per tape and not even have the whole show because the VHS release was canceled. |

Too bad you've been having problems with your Wii U, Brian. I got mine on Black Friday and I haven't had any problems outside of one random lock-up last night, which was easily fixed with a power down & reset.
When it comes to purposefully watching "bad" anime, the only time I have done that with on my own, knowing that it was bad, was when I watched all of Gundoh Musashi, just so that I could give it a "fair & complete" review on my blog... Man, was that a bad show, but the fact that it is one of my most-read posts must mean that it was worth it in small, small way.
*bolding done by me for emphasis* Man, do people love to toss out the word "classic" when something has just a little bit of age to it. Not that either are bad shows, mind you, but Fafner is only seven years old; it's not "new" by any means, but at the same time it doesn't seem old enough to be given "classic" status. I know it all comes down to personal opinions but, personally, I don't consider something worth calling a "classic" until it's at least ten years old, i.e. the time it debuted in has passed a long-enough time. Hellsing, having aired back in 2001/2002, would just make the "classic" status in my opinion. But, to be honest, I still kind of hesitate to call any applicable titles from 2000-on to be "classics", though I'm sure in another year or two I'll be comfortable calling those early-00s titles classics. |

The openings of Sora no Otoshimono, Sora No Otoshimono Forte http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GhwonBWvwwg, and Haganai all had sound effects in the openings of their last or second to last episodes. All were directed by the same guy as well. |
