Hmm. This guy was going for an attention grab, it seems. If I understand this right, he must be one of those guys who uploads songs to a video site with little more than an image or two for a video track.

My first thought when I read this though was about AMV/MAD creators there and how this would bode for them, especially with Japan's new piracy law.

Isn't that par for the course for most people in the states except on youtube and with any and every type of media not just anime? I guess it's lucky the police here have more to occupy their time with...

I am sure anyone uploading on this scale would be arrested in most countries. However two things stop you hearing about it; 1. Most people aren't this stupid; and 2. Most of the time noone would bother actually reporting it.

This is some really scary shit. I mean, if it's just videos of the entire song with like no visual content to speak of (i.e., no MAD/MMD or whatever the cool kidz are into nowadays) I can (sort of) understand, but what does this mean for people who use clips of "copyrighted" audio in otherwise original, non-profit fan works?

Man fined $100,000 for having a copyrighted name!
"I can't help what my parents named me!" the man protested in front of judge, who doubled his sentence for having a copyrighted opinion.

I have a JP nico account, looks like Toei is going to send the JP police on an airplane after me since I uploaded a picture of nami

to be fair though, the guy uploaded 500 songs...
though they should have taken them down first
this article is probably missing some information

No, not at all. You aren't immediately arrested like this guy was. Persons or providers would get sent a C&D and it would get taken down. It mostly remains a civil case, involving fines NOT jail time, until there's profit or counterfeiting involved.

Seems a bit harsh. One would think that nico's Standard Operating Procedure would be to simply delete the videos along with the account.

When it comes to copyright laws, the Japanese music industry don't play around. They're even arresting whoever edits & posts AMVs & AMV HELL videos as well? Has Japan finally become a police state?

Ok, in the Japanese Police's defense, I have to say that they are some of the nicest popo I have ever met. I ran into an officer who went out of his way to find someone that spoke English to give me directions. I doubt my local popo would do anything like that, even if they had the time and manpower to do so. So, lots of brownie points for the Japanese Police in that department.

However, when it comes to real crime, they have to be one of the least effective units on the planet. There's someone out there sending funky chemicals to locations where the KnB creator apparently once touched or plans to touch, but instead they're just going to concentrate on the AMV creator. Is it because they're easy, low risk targets to capture? So the Japanese tax payers will be happy that the police are doing more than holding on to lost items, despite living in one of the most blue collar crime free nations on the planet?

This and arresting a guy for selling fanmade AKB48 bodypillows really tells me that they have too many police officers and budget for the amount of crime they have. They're just trying to find something to do.
