To share a general observation, more of this exhibit seems dedicated to Frontier than to other canonical sequel series. Such is the privilege of youth.

Hi ANA Readers!

I just bought my advance premium ticket (2,000 yen) for the May 5th admission to the Macross 30th Anniversary event at Sunshine City. In fact, I only live a several blocks from there so I will just walk there. The premium ticket just comes with some goodies like postcards, straps, and stuff like that.

Can't wait to go and take a few pictures next to the VF-25!

Just wondering...

How would I post my pictures on the forum? Would I have to upload the pictures to some free photo-sharing site, then link them here?

@Zin5ki - Yes and no. At Ikebukuro (life-sized Valk), all Macross series were well represented, Including a lot of stuff for Macross 2 even. The Valk WAS from Frontier tho, and the current younger fan base was brought in by Frontier, so a larger amount of Frontier stuff is understandable. On the over hand, the Parco exhibit is nearly all original series, DYRL and non Frontier sequel stuff.

Pics I took can be found here:
http://www.macrossworld.com/mwf/index.php?showtopic=36562&view=findpost&p=970130

Also announced -
-a Genga exhibit in August
-A Megaroad 01 launching event in September
-3 Macross 7 events: Mac 7 on blu, a Fire Bomber Concert, and a project called simply 'Ozuma meets Fire Bomber.'

I actually liked Macross 2.

I thought the background music score was good. I enjoyed the vocal scores. And I was quite impressed by the mecha design of the Macross II, one of my favorites actually. Unfortunately, it didn't seem very popular. Though, I wish one day a toy maker could release a transformable toy of the Valkyrie (not the plastic scale model) like they have with the original Macross and Macross Frontier Valkyries.

Strangely enough, I thought episodes 3 & 4 of Macross 2 were quite well produced quality-wise. Even the English dub was impressive. However, in episodes 5 & 6, quality control and production quality appeared to have dropped. The budgets for the final two episodes may have shrunk if the earlier episodes didn't sell well.

Unlike some people here, I shouldn't be envious that you live in Japan to see Macross exhibitions. Macross and Gundam are bigger in Japan than U.S. I'm sure that Japanese fans of Hollywood films would feel the same way for unable to visit the US.

For Macross, it would be nice if major anime convention organization in the US sponsor such event, but I wouldn't count on it. Problem is that there is no major appreciation to host gallery show among young fans. Also there is whole Macross/Robotech naming that could confuse non-fans who watched the show as kids.

As animation fan, I would love to see photos of Macross Genga.

@yu_samson - I wasn't commenting on whether I like Mac2 or not, but rather was referring to the fact that there's significantly less information/materials around for it compared to other iterations (the most info on it ever printed was throughout the initial print run of Macross Chronicle, and even that had multiple errors) and that both fans and staff often refer to it as Macrosses 'black history.'
With this in mind, it got fairly good coverage at both events, and was indicative of the fact that they weren't as Macross F centric as some of the photos popping up online might suggest.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm off to a Haruhiko Mikimoto autograph session Smile

Maybe the Macross World or Robotech con is the best bet. Laughing

@The Nagabuchi
Hello! I know what you mean. I just felt like saying something about Macross 2, hehe

@reanimator
Hi there! Harmony Gold, the company behind Robotech, has been present during many U.S. conventions spreading the word of Robotech. As for Macross, you're quite right that we are unlikely to see the Macross IP (Intellectual Property) shown in any convention in North America. Due to the yet-to-be-settled legal dispute between Harmony Gold/Big West/Tatsunoko, no major Macross products are going to ship commercially overseas. I wish those guys would just hug and make up. Macross is a wonderful IP and there's an overseas market that's just waiting to see it. I think there's room for both Macross and Robotech in the industry, and it's a win/win situation for the producers and the fans.

What's "Macross Genga" by the way?

P.S. Just came back from a walk around Sunshine City. Just realized there are lots of cosplay stores here (selling outfits), hehe!

Genga are production sketches. Prior to the switch to CG, genga are the precursor sketches to douga. In many cases, the genga are done by key animators and are designed to give the other animators an idea as to how the sequence should look. These images are later tweaked around and made into douga. Key animators do the more critical shots of the sequence and the rest of the artwork is handed off to animators with less experience. Douga were then used to create the cels by xeroxing (or hand tracing, back in the days) the image onto a sheet of plastic, and then sending that off to be painted. However, now, if a production does still do sketches on paper, the douga are now the final images. They're scanned into a computer and digitally colored.

Thanks a lot for the explanation. Seems like you know quite a bit about the production process.
