So I went to the Gyakuten Saiban/Ace Attorney screening. While the theater was packed with young viewers (obviously due to the video game connection), the needless banter from HIFF at the beginning should've been scrapped. Clearly HIFF didn't do their research in trying to introduce the film, as no mention was even made of the film's Video Game roots (even the listing page makes no reference to this)!! Shut the hell up and start the movie already!!
Still, I hope this film actually inspires film festivals in the USA to not dismiss the youth market easily and make Japanese distributors think twice of being in the "NO IMPORT FOR YOU!!" mentality. There is a market for these sort of films if the brand recognition is sound and the marketing is broad. Even at $12 per ticket, there are still people willing to pay for such films willingly still. |
