ugh. This show has become so gimmicky. Maybe it is best to just end it now.

Community's one of my favorite shows and all (and I really hope it's still on the air this time next year), but I already have a bad feeling it's going to end up as just another eyeroll-enducing, anime parody that misses the mark by a mile-and-1/4 and is too cliched to even play off of the cliches (I would also say the jokes are dated, but this is supposedly a take on 80s anime). It probably doesn't help that it looks like every other anime wannabe, which sort of takes some of the punch out of the parody.

The show is usually spot-on with its ribbing, so we'll see…

Why does every US imitation have to look so bad? Technical/aesthetic wise. Flat, uninspired shading and crude designs with a lot of edges and angles... look at Kurama over in the side ad, much better despite being decades older.

Did you even read the article?

The episode will feature the characters of the series in 80's anime style.

And it's meant to be a parody, remember? They're trying to be funny, not present a serious representation of the medium.

Personally, if it's anything like they're Rankin-Bass/claymation style christmas episode from last season, it should be great.

I did, but my point is that doesn't look like 80s anime, or any anime really. Why does 'parody' have to mean they can skimp out on work? I've seen plenty of parodies with lots of effort put into them.

Our perception of 80s anime must be very different because I'm getting a serious Go Nagai vibe from it.

And in terms of "effort", rather then the quality of the animation, I'm more interested in the quality of the writing and humor, which Community tends to excel in.

Somewhere in the back of my mind, I had a feeling that Community might pull something like this. Too bad they didn't get a Japanese animation studio to work on this.

Okay... after reading about the plot and judging by the pictures it has to with the foosball plot of the episode.

I really hope it will be awesome, because I love Community! And I really hope it comes back soon (well... once it starts it hiatus).

This wasn't a bad episode! It actually gave Shirley and Jeff some nice development. spoiler[Didn't expect those two to know each other since childhood.]

I never agreed with the idea that Community BECAME cartoony, it was pretty darn cartoony already with the first season. Greendale's very existence is implausible (classes who's costs range from $6-70?!). An accounting teacher who spends all the time telling people to seize the day?! Abed as Batman saving Jeff and Pierce from a massive table/chair fort Pierce built while he was tripping?! Chang getting away with being a fake Spanish professor for that long when it's insanely obvious he knows very little Spanish?! The group taking over the school via chicken fingers?! How was this show ever NOT cartoony?

Regardless, Community still blows away any other comedy I've seen that's currently on TV (although I need to check out Louie and Happy Endings, I've heard good things about both). If it does get cancelled, TV will be a less funny place, but I'm optimistic that the fact that "4th season = syndication money for NBC" will get it renewed.

Tonight's episode was great, and the anime-sequence was hilarious. spoiler["You're a perfectly acceptable person!" "........so are you!"] Laughing And more Abed as Batman, nice! Although it was kind of strange Britta and Pierce were barely in it.

I didn't much care for the episode. It wasn't awful, for that I could just watch tonight's new Whitney and feel comedy die inside me as I do, but it didn't really evoke much feeling. It felt like there was something very wrong with the B plot.

The animation itself was all right, I there was something at least a little visually interesting about it that I can't quite put my finger on, but it didn't feel well-integrated to me. The designs reminded me at least a little of The Boondocks.
