I'm not surprised that MW3 dominate sales in Japan. I would thank Square Enix for taking over publishing COD franchise since Modern Warfare 2, ever since then I've been noticing Western games has been selling better in Japan for the last few years. LA Noire and Infamous 2 top Japan game sales when they first came out in Japan. Just 2 weeks ago, Uncharted 3 and Battlefield 3 took top sales in Japan also. I guess this article about western game are becoming more accepted in Japan is becoming true.
Now I'm wondering how Elder Scrills: Skyrim probably going to do in Japan. I recall Elder Scrolls Oblivion did well in Japan. So I am expecting Skyrim to top the Japanese game sales when it come out in Japan. |

Unless it's on the 360, which is dead in the water in Japan at this point.
I'd say shooters do well because Japan doesn't really do those. In terms of RPGs, though, Japanese ones still dominate the sales over there. Oblivion sold about 130,000 total copies, for example, while Final Fantasy 13 sold over 2 million. Can you really say Oblivion 'stormed the charts' in that regard? Though interestingly enough a shooter RPG like Mass Effect completely bombed in Japan, so I suppose putting two things together isn't always a good idea. Or maybe it's just a multiplayer thing. Let's face it, no one plays CoD or BF for the single player "story". Just the online shooting matches. ME didn't have that, so I suppose that's why. |

Hmmm......... I thought Japan's sales were already included in the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 launch; guess not. Launch sales were already 9 million on the first day! That's a record that'll be hard to top anytime soon.
But yeah, the COD:MW3 campaign isn't that long. People play it for the online experience. I'm more Gears of War myself though. I guess Japan's online community experience is building up. Still gotta play Skyrim. |

Ni no Kuni bombed pretty bad, and it was a RPG with good production values. If Oblivion sparks interest and Ni no Kuni loses momentum, it could beat Ni No Kuni's sales. Its possible that we could be seeing a shift or people choose brand stuff over somewhat new IPs. |

Wait, Square is publishing MW3? Is this just in Asia/Japan or worldwide?

So where were you when Square Enix has announced they published Modern Warfare 2 and Black Ops for the Japanese release.
What does 360 sales have to do in Japan. I look at both 360 and PS3 for Japan sales.
How is that any different from Catherine selling 200,000 copies in US.
Battlefield 3 campaign was shorter (although I like the story) then MW3, beside MW3 campaign's ending was the way I expected to be.
A little clarification on that?? Anyway, there were a lot of 360 games that ended up on PS3 like did you forget Star Ocean 4, Eternal Sonata, Ninja Gaiden 2 (as Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2), Mass Effect 2, and maybe others ended up on PS3. I don't see why people would buy Mw3 on 360 instead of PS3, and beside a lot of western games that sell well in Japan are on PS3 that include exclusives like Uncharted, Killzone, and Infamous 2. |

Mainly that there are none at this point 360 is dead in Japan, so not really. A lot of retailers have stopped stocking it and it's games in Japan. PS3 is where Japanese gamers go now. So in comparison 360 exclusives are out of luck at this point; it's why so many former-exclusive games got ported over to PS3, like Star Ocean, Eternal Sonata, Tales of Vesperia, and so forth. Just look at the difference in sales between PS3 BF3 and 360 BF3. It's relevant because a lot of big title American games are exclusive to the 360, like Gears of War and Halo. Third party shooters like BF3 and MW3 are the ones that prosper from this situation.
I don't follow.. if it sold 500,000-600,000 already, it already sold more than Oblivion did. Oblivion already stopped selling. |

Xbox 360 is considered an otaku system in Japan. Pretty much only otaku and hardcore gamers buy the games. Kinda like much of late-night anime.
Incidentally, "gaming" as a hobby is more mainstream-accepted in the West than in Japan. It wasn't that way a decade ago, when pretty much gaming is considered for geeks and students still in school. Now, everybody plays it --working people, family parents, jocks, girls, etc.-- with no longer the stigma of being weird but rather socially accepted. That's why games are selling so many now - there are more potential buyers. Gamers in the 80's and 90's have grown up, took over from the previous generation in powerful positions, and passed it on to their children. |

But Ni No Kuni PS3 didn't? 67,000 copies with different content than the DS version. If Skyrim gets around that much, that could mean something.

Exclusive in North America and Europe, probably not in Japan, as S-E would have a different deal than Activision would. |
