Having seen the anime movie (and really liking it), it would be interesting to see the live-action version. Keeping in mind that there are changes between the two versions, from looking at the trailer, it appears the live-action movie has a lot of potential.

See? Why don't people react like this with Akira! Is that so hard?

Why is it so many Japanese films look so horrible? They look like they're shot as a TV show, not a film. Hell, with shows like Walking Dead or Breaking Bad I've seen stunning cinematography on American TV shows. This barely looks better than a soap opera. I've heard theories that Japan adopted digital camerawork early and they're overly experimental or rushed with using it and don't even attempt to make it look like a theatrical film. Even Deathnote looked like a made for TV movie.
When the anime film looked so damn wonderful, it is sad this looks generic as hell.

Because they didn't set this movie in New New York City with an all white American cast?

Change is change. They could keep the setting in Japan with Japanese characters......... and change everything else. Would that be any less different? So just react like GhostShell with any change, whichever that may be.

It's not just changes. The stories are entirely different. Really, the only thing the two have in common is the time travel motif.

I could be entirely wrong, but I think The Girl Who Leapt Through time was originally a book, and the anime movie was a sort of sequil/spin-off of that? So I think this is based off the original concept, so you probably don't want to look into this expecting Makoto. Please do let me know if Im off the mark though.
Exciting that this is getting an American release though, I had no idea this was happening. Would love to watch the show, hopefully the subs are better than whats on that trailer ^^;

Pretty much Hollywood has the budget to produce multi 100 million dollar productions. A movie anywhere else, if you're lucky, might cost 1-10 million.

You're correct about the anime version being a sequel/spinoff of a book, but I *think* the live movie is also a spin-off. (I haven't read the book so I can't say for sure). The live-action movie was kind of disappointing to me. I was glad I saw it but I don't think I would want to see it again. That said I can't give any specific reasons as to why I disliked it (other than wishing it wasn't so... spin-off-y? if that makes sense) so maybe I'll give it another shot when it comes out here.
And maybe if the movie is popular enough, Bandai or whoever can think about finally giving us the novel here! Watching so many adaptations really makes me want to read the original.

Yes, it is based on a novel from the 1960's I believe. There was a 1983 live-action version made that starred '80s pop-idol Tomoyo Harada and was directed by Nobuhiko Obayashi (Hausu, 1977). The girl in the anime version's supposed to the be niece of the one in this movie.

I actually agree, however the equivalent degree of change IF they were to keep the setting in Japan with Japanese characters would be to: 1) discard much of the story--so no different from current plans 2) completely change the names of all the characters while still calling it Akira.
That type of cognitive dissonance will provide the same experience for what's currently planned.

if i have this straight, makoto's aunt who's restoring the painting in the anime version is the main character from the original story and the manga. and this story is about her daughter who would be makoto's cousin. right?

fwiw,
there already have been at least four (4) live-action adaptations prior to the Bandai-anime and this recent 2010 version.
they really like milking it.

No. Change like most everything in this world can vary in quality. If you've read people's complaints about certain changes it is always implied that it is their opinion that the change in question is bad. Likewise the proponents of the changes generally imply the changes are for the good.
