I about died of laughter last night when it came on. Literally, I saw the fake title card and started cracking up. My mom just gave me a funny look until she saw what was going on in the rest of the skit. Seriously, I haven't laughed that much in a while.

Meh. I'm not offended or anything because I actually don't know any anime/manga fans like this, though I'm told they exist (just like the squealing yaoi fangirl, a very vocal but very small minority). This did however remind me how flat SNL "comedy" comes across for me. On the rare occasions I run across it on TV I'm always terribly underwhelmed, and this is no exception. It was, however, funny to see the guy trying to pull off the J-idol hair (which was of course a wig, but still). Somehow I don't think twice about seeing that style on idols but when I see it on a caucasian I think, "Well that's unusual." Strange how that is.

I don't even know how to react. I "get it" but it didn't ring true with me, I guess is how to put it.

This is about as funny as watching someone make fun of the Special Olympics.

Well, I lol'd at this because I actually have met people like this and it's horribly embarrassing to be around them In fact one of my co-workers is a not-quite-as-extreme version of this, and it is annoying when she corners me to tell me what latest Japanese interesting thing she learned.

The only funny part of that was the professor ripping them.

It's currently NBC's highest-rated scripted show. It's had a bit of a renaissance in the last 5-6 years.

Eh... I dunno. I get what they were trying to do, but I feel like it would have been funnier if they hadn't hit you in the face with the joke quite as much. But I guess that's a pretty common sin with SNL sketches. I think maybe it would have been funnier if they had been high school kids instead of college students. Most people I know who went through a "weeb phase" grew out of it long before college. Plus that gives you the opportunity to throw in some angst and disapproving parents.

I can't say I ever expected to see a Candy Candy reference on SNL though.

To be honest, I think that hairstyle looks stupid on anyone, idols included. It's like being halfway towards growing a mullet.

Americans can't relate to Japanese Anime, except for Pokemon. But, a very rare and unknown character, from Japan, gets mentioned on NBC's SNL? I just laughed myself when the 1976's Japanese Anime Candy Candy was mentioned with the line: "We need to leave Pony's Home to find our true love!" Really, this Anime is quite rare to American audiences and the only thing that could be found at least, on YouTube, is the unpopular English dub made by the unknown company ZIV International, which launched the title on Video back in 1981-82, under the Family Home Video series. Sure, you can find the whole series dubbed to Spanish, Greek or Italian, but as an English dub, only the first 2 episodes and if you are lucky, you may find other episodes in Japanese language with English subs. The SNL cast may have revived the interest in this anime, but quite the American audiences are not really getting the real taste of Candy Candy! Exclamation

The thing I didn't like was that even now it seems that mainstream anime and pop-Japan spoofs STILL largely depends on imitating pre-90's English voice acting full of OOOOOHH!'s and Hee-hee-hee exclamations. It makes you laugh because it's so stupid but it is lazy.

I REALLY doubt that

I assumed it was more of a lazy caricature of Japanese mannerisms than a nod at Speed Racer-esque dubbing, but you could be right.
