Kinda sad that Inubaka's dogs were snubbed.

Aw, it's nice to see Patrasche on there. I would've voted for him.

It's interesting that there seem to be so many more cats in anime than dogs--I wonder why that is? At first I had trouble thinking of other dogs (not on this list) but then remembered some of my favorites: Ein from Cowboy Bebop, Densuke from Dennou Coil, and that adorable dog in Eden of the East. Also--does Shigure from Fruits Basket count? Razz

In the video extras for Spirited Away, there's a clip of Miyazaki meeting with the team of animators. At one point, he goes around the table and asks them what pets they've had. They all answer none, canary, or cat. Miyazaki responds "None of you have ever seen eel prepared. None of you have ever had a dog as a pet. Japanese culture is doomed."

I think it's the reality of living in a place barely large enough for a human that keeps people from essentially the act of cruelty of keeping a dog in the same space. So the animators draw what they know. They know cats.

Thanks for your reply, Unready! It makes a lot of sense that animators (and I suppose mangaka) would draw cats since that's what they know, though I also wonder if it's because people in general are more fascinated by cats? For example, loldogs do exist, but if google search numbers are correct, there are about four times as many lolcats.

And hey--I own Spirited Away, I should check out the extras again since I don't remember seeing that clip! Ah, Miyazaki. Always with the doom.

(Sorry for the OT post!)

Until someone comes up with something better, Ein will always be my favorite anime canine. I guess the dog from Excel Saga -- the one who's Excel's emergency ration -- is kinda funny, if just for the pitiful song it "sings" during the credits.
