Well, that's sad. I've been waiting for the PS3 port since last year, and now they decided to cancel it altogether.

Yeah, I would have preferred playing it on a big screen, but if there's a PSP port, I'll play. Just because the anime was mediocre doesn't mean that it's not a good game.

true the said can be said for most visual novels although the 1st edition like most are "eroge or adult" so hmm but i am sure they might pick it back up. Most of my import games are ps3 visual novel ports from japan.

The game developer August announced on Wednesday that August and publisher Kadokawa Shoten have cancelled development on the planned PlayStation 3 port of its Fortune Arterial: Akai Yakusoku game and the new PSP game Fortune Arterial: Iori no Yabō "due to various circumstances." The entire development staff will announce new works as soon as possible, but apologized for the dual cancellations.

Obviously they're not going to disclose the real reasons, but I can only suspect that they ran into some production problems in doing the PS3 port, and now it's been delayed so long that whatever momentum they had thanks to the anime has died out. The anime itself also wasn't terribly successful, at least by the metrics we might normally use for this sort of thing (not a lot of discussion online, rather poor BD/DVD sales, clearance-priced inventory on Amazon, etc.). Though this is totally anecdotal, most game players I know (myself included) were a bit disappointed by the story changes they made in the anime, spoiler[particularly the fact that they danced around the romance, rather than leaving it at the center of the story, thus totally altering the game's plot]. If they were banking on the PS3 port to recoup their costs, it should have come out right as the anime was finishing or shortly thereafter, as is usually the case. That it got delayed at that point was already a bad sign. At this point, August is probably better off just releasing the new content in a new PC version at some point (though they did actually just re-release the original PC game in a Windows 7-compatible version recently).

So all that said, this sort of looks like Kadokawa had high hopes to make this a big franchise, the anime kind of fell flat, the game was delayed for production reasons, and they decided to just cut their losses and move on. The one thing I will say about the anime, though, is that the character designs and overall visual style sure were pretty to look at; one of the few cases IMO where the anime actually comes close to living up to the character designs from the original game. And despite my concerns as a game player, if I take it as a standalone work, I did still enjoy it.

From what I'm seeing, visual novels can't make a very easy transition from PC to PS3 unlike from PC to PS2. People's demand for "higher graphics" nowadays is ridiculously high while visual novels remain trapped in the past. The profit of selling the game was probably not going to be enough to make up for the cost of putting it on blu-ray discs. As for PSP, visual novels just have not done all that well on the handheld sadly.

To be honest, PS2 was the best system for these but now that's essentially come and gone sadly.

With all the delays, the games probably would've come out half-baked anyways. Laughing
