I still don't like him, but kudos to him for helping. It's great to see how many people are coming together to support Japan through this disaster.

Kudos to Levy for donating his time to the people in Sendai. I hope more aid gets into Japan soon.

It still doesn't absolve him of his past transgressions.

he's a nice enough guy just a bit of a dink at seperating his business from his pleasure. He's that guy who shouldnt run a comic shop cos he's too much of a superfan.

Good to see he's helping out, its alot more than im doing

I should point out: Stu was in Japan when the quake hit anyway, and it seems like he's volunteering with other locals. That's great, since he was already here. (He speaks Japanese, too).

But it is NOT a good idea for individual people to think they can fly into Japan and help at this point. That only puts extra burden on the people here at the moment.

Unless you are an official government rescue squad/specialist unit, don't come to Japan trying to help out right now. What they need now is to establish supply routes and handle the logistics of getting fuel and supply to all the effected areas. A bunch of non-Japanese speaking volunteers is an extra burden.

Yeah, I confess to being very critical of Stu in his publishing career, but I got nothing bad to say here. Hell, he actually went up to the hard hit Sendai area from where he was. I'd guess he was Tokyo. I keep hearing through the grape vine from a friend who lives there. He said for example the local McDonald's ran out of fries, so you know things are rough. Though nothing in Tokyo is as bad as where the tsunami hit up north there, closer to the epicenter. That Stu went there is pretty amazing. That's like going from Washington DC up to Boston. The man is running up into the worst of it. God be with him with all the horror he has to face.

And, yeah, unless you have family over there, there's no reason to head to Japan. There should already be enough volunteers and various aid groups heading over. If you really really really feel the need to help out, then sign up with one of them, but I don't know if they're really recruiting right now.

Clearly if he's got time to Tweet, he must not be doing anything terribly important.

Yeah, from my understanding he was in Tokyopop's apartment in Japan for meetings with publishers when the whole quake/tsunami hit. This was a good action on his part.

I'm happy to see Stu staying behind to help Japan. He's one of the many people in the US anime industry working to help Japan. I ust put this link up on Tokyopop's Facebook page.

The last thing that the rescuers/government guys need is more people going into the danger zone and causing even more headaches for them.

One of the things that a First-Responder Friend of mine hates is people, with good intentions, putting themselves into danger a/or doing unessential/unnecessary acts in a time of crisis. Unless Stu has some sort of Rescue/Medical background we don't know about (if someone wishes to verify this, then please do speak up and mention it) all he's doing is adding to the chaos in being a person that doesn't need to be in that area. The best thing he could've done was just to stay put where he was (or in an appropriate shelter if the domicile he was in is now rendered uninhabitable) and do something else.

Most likely, he's just there to move stuff or drive stuff or cook/serve stuff - like us would be in our local Salvation Army, soup kitchen, or homeless shelter (obviously, a lot of Japanese are now starving and homeless). If so, that would not be in the way.

(Or eventually maybe like Habitat for Humanity, where even the most neophyte of us could help build a house.)

Don't worry; he's not there to help you.
He gets brownie points from the Japanese, and that's all that matters - or should matter.

For what's it's worth, any Americans here donating time or money to the relief effort don't get any brownie points from me neither. Laughing
