True heroes, all in the disguise of a good character. That's how it should be for inspiring others. Really like hearing stories like this.

Even the anti-hero will end up doing something nice. Lol.
Man...who would've thought that once small deed would lead to one of the most touching news stories we could ever read on here...Ok, I'm gonna go do something nice for someone now. *walks off* |

I'm about to put my cultural ignorance for all to see but what exactly is the significance of a $360 backpack? It seems like a rather steep price to pay for something that a first grade student would be using.
If I am guessing correctly, I've seen the stereotypical elementary school hard backpack in various anime. Does something like that really cost several hundred dollars a piece? Not trying to deflate the trend, as I think it's awesome, but this little detail is really confusing me. If it is truly a $360 backpack, then maybe the Japanese should consider finding a more cost effective standardized solution for their primary school children to haul their books. |

It's not a huge leap to imagine that the backpacks are filled with gifts. Backpack - $40 School Uniform (1xSummer/1xWinter) - $160 Shoes (1xPlay/1xDress) - $50 Play Clothes (2x) - $60 One Year of Basic School Supplies - $50 Warming the Cockles of a Jaded Heart - Priceless These are orphanages as well as schools so it doesn't necessarily even means school supplies. Raising a kid in any country is a very, very expensive prospect and while $360 can pay for any of a number of the incidental costs, when diluted over a school year, I don't imagine they'll be dining on fatty tuna while messaging their pals on their iPhone. Anyway, it's a fantastic story and one that warms me to the core. I hope this is a tradition that will carry on for years to come. |

I think in the first Tiger Mask gift news story the article mentioned that the backpacks are expensive because they're made from quality material (i.e. real leather) and a child was expected to use the backpack for his or her entire time in elementary school. If someone's going to use a backpack for that long (and I can tell you none of my backpacks lasted close to 6 years) it better be well made and be worth the money. |

It's nice to see that manga / anime can be source of good news stories or good deeds.
