This makes me really sad.
I think Uchuu Senkan Yamato is brilliant. It's really interesting to see it's influence on other "space battleship" type shows.

Agreed, I'm still working on seeing more of the franchise but it's really great stuff and as a total scifi fan and someone who loves ship-based scifi like this and say Star Trek, it's right up my alley so I'm totally sad as well.

I'm not sure what the overall consensus was on his last project, the Yamato Resurrection movie, since the equally great Matsumoto wasn't also involved so knowing fandom no doubt there's multiple takes on the movie, but I really liked it, I hope he had scripted out more of the intended story as while it was complete that film also still ended with a chapter 1-like card, and there's just so much that can be done with the new crew.

Also it'd be a shame if the first Yamato in years didn't lead to a return to activity of the franchise with more new anime.

"Sports" in Japan doesn't mean the same thing as it does in America does it? Not sure why else they would want to try and interview Matsumoto otherwise.
