Has this disrupted the panels and events significantly? That is, how long did it take for normal operations to get restarted?

Given that pulling a fire alarm is a big thing to an idiot, and conventions are full of those people, it doesn't seem too far-fetched. Any other cases of fire alarms at conventions?

I wouldn't be surprised.

Oh wait, I just checked the time, and its only 2:30 PM now, if the fire alarm got pulled at 2:00 PM. So this is happening right now.

(sigh) probably some moron heard "the roof is on fire" and took it all too literally...

UPDATE: http://www.otakon.com/events_schedule.asp

oh God no...the fire alarm disrupted the panel featuring the first get-together of the Hetalia: Axis Powers English dub cast!!

That was one of the biggest and most aniticipated panels at the con.

No wait...it seems it came halfway through the Hetalia English dub premiere...but if they don't get people back in...yeah the English dub panel will be lost.

it also disrupted a Gainax fan-panel, and a podcasting panel.

Will the industry panels demand to take precedence over fan-panels later in the afternoon, which will have to be bumped?

Moreover...how do they communicate panel schedule changes to the con-attendees?

I sure wouldn't want to be the Otakon panels organizer right now.

Well, they do have a twitter, as well as a schedule changes page.

I'd assume they also have some sort of info booth that will have the updated information.

Hopefully this doesn't hurt the industry panels Confused

I do wonder what happened. Probably some moron who was dared to pull the alarm, or maybe some outsider wanting to ruin the con-goers fun. Maybe smoke or steam set it off, though. Hey, if a school fire alarm can be set off by burning toast, then it can happen there!

Lousy time for it to happen, though.

only some attendees are reliant on up to the minute Twitter updates...though I guess that's as much as can be asked.

They'll have things in place by Sunday (when everyone can go back to their hotel room and check the online schedule) but rest of Saturday should be a mess.

Even at the local convention I've been to the fire alarm has gone off a few times over the past few years (once due to a power outage, another due to something down the street, another time it was the smoke machines, ect) so this is hardly uncommon.
And it looks like a beautiful day in Baltimore, bet this is the most sun some of those guys have seen in a long time.

"Guest of Honor Yuji Mitsuya led the audience from his interupted panel to the nearby Sheraton Hotel and continued his panel in the hotel's lobby"

Good on that man is all I can say.

According to Hetalia's brand manager, it was a grease fire that set off the alarm. At least it wasn't a prank...

If there isn't any sign of fire or out of place damage, I am going to assume it was either a prank or someone accidently touched it. Either way, pulling any fire alarm on purpose is never a good idea. I am all for jokes, but this is one "joke" that should never be done.

The reports coming out seem to indicate that it wasn't a prank, but a fire at a food vendor's booth.
