Why the hell would I want to go to all the way to Downtown L.A. for a friggin' trailer? Seriously, that shit's just gonna be uploaded a few minutes later on Youtube. Laughing Is Di$ney that cheap that they can't provide you with the actual film? But assuming I did go, it'd be nice if you gave me an address. Rolling Eyes

Yea, this will be on Youtube or trailer websites a few days after that. Why bother.

For a minute there I thought this was a necro post. I mean I've seen the whole movie like 2008, and it's even been transmitted on our Channel 4 TV? Was it not released in the US then?

Mohawk: No, because the live-action Syfy movie was the only adaptation legally allowed to be shown here until now.

Watched it on Film4 a few months ago (and almost fell asleep at work as a result). Why is the trailer still having a World Premiere when the film itself was released many years ago? A mystery. Oh right, assuming it's going to be released in the US soon...

So, it's a case of "world" == USA (just like they have "world champions" for some American sports... Wink )

According to my logs, I've owned the UK DVD of Tales From Earthsea since the end of 2008.
(weird: Amazon UK lists US import versions of Ghibli DVDs, but Amazon USA _doesn't_ list UK imports of Ghibli DVDs,
so Americans need go to the UK site if they want to get the UK version.)

I guess in another 1 or 2 years we'll see a "world premiere" news post about Ocean Waves... Razz

Yeah the yanks do have a Terry Pratchett way of thinking about the "world". It's what makes them so endearing to the rest of it. Wink

Oh yeah, now that you mentioned that, I do remember that. That live action thing was called "Firefly", or summat? Sci-Fi UK are still showing repeats of it. It looks too cheesey for my tastes so never got into it.

No, Firefly is a completely unrelated series, by Joss Whedon.

"Earthsea" is the name of the SyFy movie (which was just on a few weeks ago, IIRC). It's not a bad movie (definitely one of their better ones), but they combined the first two books (which take place 30 or so years apart) to create a love story in it. The adaptation of the story of the first book isn't so bad, but the second one is barely there in recognizable form. Nonetheless, to make this movie, SyFy got the US (and possibly Canadian) movie rights, which prohibited Gedo Senki from being released over here.

Of course, between reading Ursula K. Le Guin's comments and speaking to people who have seen Gedo Senki, the SyFy movie sounds vastly superior.

Oh right, "Earthsea". Gendo Senki wasn't that bad if one takes into consideration that a movie never matches the book word for word, scene for scene. Even the Harry Potter movies aren't gospel, and it is Goro Miyazaki's first attempt at direction. I've never read the Earthsea novels yet and not knowing that background the movie still played well enough for me. My only criticism is that it ended too vaguely.

I'm curious about this movie because someone told me that Mariska Hargitay was a part of the english dub...

I'm more amused at Cheech Marin doing the dub. Yeah, he's done straight-man roles for a while now, but I'm curious how he'd handle an anime film.
