Anyone know the reason he "abruptly ended his work"?

Hopefully, it won't suck as badly as Batman Death Mask. And hopefully, it won't be a reboot/retcon type thing. Though it's kind of annoying finding that out now, and accepting how it "ended", because I've made up my own ending for the series in my head. And I'm worried Natsume will come up with something wretched in its place after being away from the project for so long.

I liked Batman: Death Mask, even if I was incredibly confused.
I wish they would of animated it

He didn't end it; it was canceled. Sort of a misleading turn of phrase.
His follow up was also pretty good, and actually managed a pretty decent ending, even though it was probably also canceled. I'm not surprised he's moved to a less mainstream magazine; he seemed to struggle against the limitations Sunday imposed. There were a few wry jokes in his second series about problematic characters unexpectedly disappearing from the narrative.

Zero: I wish Natsume would've done a story with the regular Batman villains, because it's clear that he can draw them pretty well.

Well that wouldn't have been so bad, but nonetheless, I thought Death Mask was still good.

This is AWESOME! The best news I've heard in a while! I hope he can reach the conclusion he wants to with the sequel.
