Well at least Bamboo agrees with me that a lot of the humor is universal. I will be picking up Zetsubou but I think I'm going to pass on most of the rest.

YES.

Pluto is amazing. 20th Century Boys is nice, but Pluto is the true follow-up to Monster, in my opinion. THIS is Urasawa's great storytelling skills in action.

+ Zetsubou-sensei is great =)

I agree. The masterful storytelling of Pluto is something to be experienced. The softness of the artwork itself also brings life to the otherwise lifeless robots in the story. And yes, the Urasawa rendition of Atom is a sight to behold. Overall, I'm quite happy with my purchase of this book, because now I can finally get my girlfriend into something that I'm proud of.

Ditto! Since they've yet to release the anime, I'm definitely going to check this out.

And let the chorus of "Pluto is amazing!" rise from the masses, because it really, really is. And the first volume has so many extras in the back, interviews, the history of Astro Boy... I love it so much!

RightStuf's been sitting on my copy since 02/24 to my annoyance. <grr>

I was impressed by Pluto and I'm looking forward to the 2nd volume (which RightStuf is also sitting on)...

psssst... It's Carlo.

This column is always an enormous guilt trip for me because it reminds me of all the great manga I'm too lazy/apathetic to read. Once I'm done collecting everything in the Ponent Mon catalog and quit being all pretentious and overly-selective I'll come back and read some of these A-grade titles, I swear!

I was about to say... Wink Now, I don't know whether he was reading the conversation going on in the Lucky Star OVA thread, or he had psychic powers, because I could swear that we are talking about Zetsubou sensei and it's links with culture and appeal to an American audience. Readers could be in for a kick I see.

Ouch on Hayate x Blade! I guess her brand of humor isn't working out for you, huh? Sad

(of course that mean none of you ANN users should shy away from this title!)

Been waiting for months since Zetsubou was announced. Went directly to Barnes and Noble once work was over and bought my copy.

Now waiting for May.

My copy of Zetsubo shipped this morning. Honestly, it was a blind buy, so I'm really glad that Carlos gave it a good review.

I can't wait to read it. =3

Ahh I can never get my columns right.. Ok Carlo agrees with me.
Yeah there is so much manga out there but I'm always so lazy so I tend to go straight to the anime if one is available even though I love manga.

Agreed. Maybe it's the yuri fangirl within me but I love Hayate X Blade. Funny characters and goofy swordfights. I like it Very Happy

The ideas behind the general flow of the main joke in SZS is easy to grasp, but with the TV series there's just far too many puns to keep it feasible for a direct translation with a dub, not to mention all the screentext.
