I know you reviewed both together but I want to know what you feel overall on Tsubasa as one entity with the same criteria and xxxHolic as the other.
For Example Tsubasa was
Overall (dub)
Overall (sub)
Story
Animation
Art
Music : ?
and xxxholic was etc.;

I think this review is a little harsh. I think the holic movie in paritcular was stellar and very beautiful and fun to watch. Also, the the tsubasa movie was all it could be expected to be given the length, and is far better in storytelling and quality than the lame fillers in the tv anime that tried to make the series far more childish than it actually is.
I also think anyone expecting to get alot of plot out of these short movies is expecting too much. They are side stories because thats all they really could be, since they were shown in theatres and marketed with the idea that people may see them without much prior knowledge of the shows.
Id say that both are worth seeing for fans of either series, moreso for those who have read a good chunk the manga (esp. for tsubasa) beforehand. If you are planning on watching either anime or read either manga, I'd suggest not to use these movies as an intro. Read/watch those first, and then veiw the movies as a side.

I recently watched this with no previous knowledge on xxxHolic and found it very accessible and easy to follow. It was interesting to watch the first xxxHolic DVD a few weeks later to see how these three characters met, but don't think it is by any means necessary to enjoying the film.
I would go as far as saying that the xxxHolic film is really CLAMP at it's finest. I think that this argument that this double feature should be only viewed by hardcore fans is opposite to my stance. I think that xxxHolic is more enjoyable to the casual fan compared to most of the other CLAMP works which can be hard to take if you are not a hard core CLAMP fan. I would say something like the Tokyo Babylon OAVs or the RG Veda OAVs are more likely candidates to be avoided unless you are a hard core CLAMP fan.

I have been considering checking out these movies, but I think I'll try and borrow them before making any purchasing plans, based on this review. Neither really sound all that interesting, even though I love xxxHolic very much. But since I can watch the series (which, while out of order, is definitely clearly canonical), I'm not sure why I would necessarily need side-story movies (especially since I dislike the crossover nature of the two series, since I only maybe like Tsubasa...I liked volume 5 at least, which is as far as I've gotten, in comparison to having read all the English release of the xxxHolic manga...and I started collecting the series at the same time).

As far as I remember the movies are not crossovering with each other.
Really if Tsubasa was only crossovering with XXXHolic but no, now Tsubasa is a sequel to Cardcaptor Sakura. To be honest, I think Clamp start overdoing it.

Actually, there is a slight crossover: The scene where AU Tomoyo and Syaoran give Yuko the key as a payment shows up at the end of both movies. I thought it was a neat little reference to the occasional crossovers in the manga which are now becoming massive.
My own opinion? The Tsubasa movie wasn't that great, and I probably won't watch it often once I get the series once it's thinpacked (and from what I see on Amazon, the second season is going to start being released very soon, so unless disaster occurs the whole series will in fact show up in Region 1). The Holic movie, on the other hand, was alot of fun, and I thought the dub was absolutely great. It made me really look forward to the series and I highly recommend it.

I haven't seen the Tsubasa movie (it's on my Netflix queue though), but I really enjoyed the XXXHOLiC and am going to use to to introduce my mom to the series. She wants to read the manga; this'll be a good intro to the basic ideas and characters, plus the awesome music and story are a plus.

Haha, Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials was also my impression when I first saw the pairing of birds in the Tsubasa movie.

I had no previous knowledge about anything in the xxxHolic franchise but I thought the film was lots of fun. I originally only bought this DVD to see some key animation by Shinya Ohira and was dumbstruck by the overall visual beauty of the xxxHolic movie. It's completely worth the price tag based on the animation alone. But like Randall Miyashiro, I found the story to be very accessible and didn't have any trouble following it.

Frankly, I don't understand why anyone would want to watch a movie (side story movie, rather than adaptation) from a popular franchise if they weren't already familiar with the franchise. For example, I'd never watch a Bleach movie, a Naruto movie, the Full Metal Alchemist movie, if I didn't know who the characters were and backstories. It baffles me why anyone would try.
The xxxHolic and Tsubasa movies are fun, if pointless. The xxxHolic movie has a bit more redeemable points, since it's gorgeous and has more time to flesh out the storyline. But even then, I enjoyed both movies.
And on a side note, this review is surprisingly late, since the DVD came out back in February...

I'd argue that doing so often makes sense if you're someone looking to introduce themselves to a particular franchise. Your usual shounen-based movie generally tells a side story unrelated to the main plot, so it's a good opportunity to get acquainted with the concept and characters of a series without needing to worry about catching up with a three-year-old storyline. (The obvious exception from your examples is the FMA movie, since that's a direct sequel to the anime series and would make no sense on its own.) Heck, I watched whichever Naruto movie aired on CN despite having seen very little of the series, just for the hell of it.

Well I just got done watching these last night. I thought they were fun. The Tsubasa was rushed as expected. I have read up to V.3 of the manga, so I think I probably got some of the random points of that one. But the clean visuals were the main attraction. As for the xxxHOLiC movie, I thought it was great. Now I have read up to the most current US release of manga, but even so I thought it was about 90% accessible to a new audience. Not so with the Tsubasa flick, but again, it's 30 minutes rushed.
Overall the xxxHOliC movie is the better of the two, but I enjoyed both with their higher quality visuals and great* sound. Oh and the extras we pretty neat as well. I mean at least they packed the discs pretty good for the length of the shows. Good deal.
*On the xxxHOLiC movie, and the little girl was in the window, and started banging on the glass. I about jumped out of my seat. Great stuff!
