I really love the Sannoh match, but I can't love THE FIRST.

Slam Dunk was a story about the passion and love for basketball, this was represented by every main player of the team on their own arc and in Sakurai's case it was in Sannoh. So I was extremely disappointed when THE FIRST decides to instead ignore all that and put the spotlight on Ryota, which I admit was underserved on the manga, this wasn't the place to do it.

VS Sannoh is Sakuragi's peak, the place where every single match prior has been leading us to. The rebounds, the shoots, the DUNK every single thing that Sakuragi worked to learn in the story he executed it perfectly VS Sannoh, he evolves, he blossoms, he brings the team together when individually they fall short against the superior Sannoh team. Sakuragi is the beating heart of Shohoku, the beating heart of Slam Dunk when he admits in the middle of the match that he isn't risking his body for Haruko's love anymore, not even for the coach or the team, he's doing it because he loves basketball, I cry every damn time I read it, it's perfect, it's beautiful.

I think the FIRST is an excellent product on its own, but personally I will always skip Ryota's flashbacks and just watch the game. Don't know what was Inoue thinking by missing the mark so much.

I loved this movie probably more than its original manga version. Ryota's story is quite serious and told properly by toning the jokes the manga was known for. In far, it feels like Inoue wanted The First Slam Dunk to feel more like Real and Vagabond in terms of atmosphere as the humor and music are nearly dead with the latter only focusing on simple sound effects especially in the climax of the match which captures the hype the manga finale was known for.

While Sakuragi has the same role as in the manga, the more focused character is Ryota as I believe he didn't have much of a backstory in the manga. I guess the only character kinda affected negatively by this adaptation was Rukawa as he barely has interactions with Ryota and instead only has stuff to do with Sakuragi.

Did Netflix fix the Anime series subtitles because the official Youtube one's by Toei are god awful and if not I really, really hope Discotek, Animego or even Viz release it on Blu-ray. I'll take it even on a SD-Blu-ray just fix the awful subtitles! Bonus points if they can find the dub masters.

Love the work NYAV Post, Michael Sinterniklaas and Stephanie Sheh do. Same feelings here, I just adore how smart and brilliantly they direct their actors and help them develop and grow their performances.

Yeah, kind of a weird thing to do to your main character.
