problem's are the prices imo... i know there isn't much to do about it, but going to buy Kare Kano and old one from the 90's still runs at about $10 a volume adds up to $210 before taxes and what not

Prices yes, but there's probably not anything that has material catchy enough to get people to buy right. I'm not surprised, since this isn't the first time I've seen it, and Naruto's been the one I've seen lately on the list.

I find it really ironic how you used that as your example because I recently bought the entire Kare Kano series (vol. 1-21) a few weeks ago as a result of an influx of cash from Christmas. XP I was lucky enough to buy them online on sale for about six dollars each at rightstuf. Woohoo rightstuf!

I don't know about the US but here in the UK, prices are generally a bit cheaper than a novel of the same length would be and they're a hell of a lot cheaper (per page) than European or American comics. If you think back to how things were a decade ago, it's more unbelievable that manga ever got into the bestseller lists than that it isn't always there. |

The only kind of book here in the US that is cheaper than a manga is a trade paperback (at least that I can think of). In general, yes, manga is cheaper here than the average book. Hardcovers are running $20 and up when they first comme out, paperback editions usually start at $10 and up, and then you get the trade paperback editions, which tend to fall apart so easily after a couple of reads...

If you take a look at it (...which I will, one of these days), there's only a a couple of manga titles that ever consistently make it onto USA Today's bestseller list. Other than Naruto, Bleach and Fruits Basket usually place for a couple of weeks...and that's about it. Negima and Fullmetal Alchemist have made the list a few times, though not recently, and I think Kingdom Hearts has been there once or twice.
The "problem", for all it's worth, has nothing to do with prices. Other than the occasional exception, an overwhelming majority of the manga that are published in the U.S. are just not nearly as popular as some people think. (then again, for perspective, there are dozens, if not hundreds of sci-fi, mystery, romance and action novels published each and every week. And very few of them will ever sell well enough to become best-sellers too.) |
